Runners look a little long, need a IAT sensor, other then that, looks fine.

RUnners look rough as hell, I would have ground them down smooth before sealing it up.

did you jb weld your throttle body to the intake?

im not trying to ---- on you but did you know that there is actually some guidelines to building intake manifolds?

Is that a AEM fuel rail?

idiot-stick 12-03-2008 10:05 AM

Re: first home made intake manifold...WUT

hahaha, does AEM really label their parts so blatantly? I guess it's so ricers will know what parts they've got.

Nice IM. Better than I could do.

No the TB is not welding to the intake.

they look rough because i put more meat on them and then went and ported them out like valocity stacks, now there is one that is forword by 1cm. and now i did not use a jig. i searched for months on disigns on guidelines but didnt find anything. didnt want to post on here and sound like a dump ass.

as far as the runners being to long a stock h22 has 8 inch runners they ones i have are 7 inch. the stock one curls back up this one is straght

Ive seen much better, and much worse ALU tig welds fail. Aslong as it holds together looks fine.

Re: first home made intake manifold...WUT

no jb weld used at all those are taped holes

Re: first home made intake manifold...WUT

I probably would have went with a little shorter runner, but thats solid HMT ---- right there. Nice work!

ass dyno?

REAL DYNO!?

nice backyard hook ass manifold... :6

this will be tested to let you know. in about 3 weeks i have a stock ported mani that i did, a type s and a skunk2 to test it next to. i will test results.

Re: first home made intake manifold...WUT

Did you pressure tested it for leaks? The runners look huge and I don't know about the angle of that TB.
Other than that, looks like it's too big—big throttle, big plenum, big runners. Suspect torque-killer, imo.

thanks for this build gives me ideas for d15 build.

avistar23 12-07-2008 07:49 PM

Re: first home made intake manifold...WUT

I think that the uneven finish on the runners where they enter the plenum will lead to alot of turbulence. If you google the subject of intake manifolds you can learn alot on their design runner length plenum volume etc. However im definitely interested in seeing the dyno!

I've never tackled building an intake so I'll post a link and be quiet. :)

nice work but those runners are long as ---- cut em down a little.

nice large plenum and short runners.

powah.

h22-kirb 12-11-2008 02:11 AM

Re: first home made intake manifold...WUT

i tnink the runners are fine. the runners are shorter the oem by half inch.

EG-prince 12-11-2008 02:28 AM

Re: first home made intake manifold...WUT

oem is not necessarily built to make optimum power either...

avistar23 12-11-2008 03:17 AM

Re: first home made intake manifold...WUT

you keep referring to the oem length..take a look at most sheet metal intakes, short runner big plenum for top end....the oem one is made for drive ability low end around town etc. lets say u dyno and it makes a good bit more power...well imagine with shorter runners properly size im sure it would do even better up top.

ISL33P 12-11-2008 08:04 PM

Re: first home made intake manifold...WUT

Nothing wring with long runners for a na application. Na's need the bottom end torque otherwise they become lazy to drive and even more boring than what they already are.

For an na application I would only bother with an aftermarket manifold unless you are using som crazy spec cams and plan to make serious power and revs.

Edit - nice idea. Maybe next go for a tapered plenum using pipe instead of a box. Boxes create pocket s of "dead" air in the corners which create turbulence on the inside.

well jeez, oem is so great i dont know why anyone would make a custom intake manifold.

Re: first home made intake manifold...WUT

standard ones serve their purpose and serve it well for a a majority of na cars

Re: first home made intake manifold...WUT

Looks good for your ability level. Your aluminum TIG looks exactly like mine lol. Still haven't got the pedal control down like the pros. I'm also still learning how to position the torch properly so it stays even the whole bead. Also still learning to dial the machine in properly. Basically all the little ---- that makes welds look professional haha. One day I'll be able to do aluminum like some of the ---- I've seen in this section. I've only been welding for 6 months, so I have a lot more learning to do before I'll attempt to make a major component for my car. If you like it that's all that matters.

zero937 04-14-2009 01:24 AM

not bad

Claudio157 04-14-2009 09:06 AM

i love it...what was the size of the tubes that you use?

sparklingwiggle 04-14-2009 04:03 PM

Kick ass!

turbominime4door 04-15-2009 05:18 PM

nice work.better than shellin out 250 for a skunk2 if it dont work what you got invested but maybe 20 bucks and time

gdout90accord 04-16-2009 11:18 PM

looks good but how much whp increase?

im going to guess there was a loss in power or torque. there is alot more science to building an intake manifold then welding a box to four straight tubes

twack 04-17-2009 10:47 PM

i have a decent made intake manifold on my dsm and i still love it, got no reaL SPECS BUT DOES THE TRICK IN MY BOOK

JDM-EG6 04-21-2009 12:20 AM

it does the job!!!

danman 04-21-2009 03:57 PM

The more I researched how to design the "perfect" intake manifold, the more I found that nobody agrees on a perfect formula for runner area, runner length, and plenum volume. If you ask 10 experts, they will have you build 10 different pieces, each one being "best".

Yours looks great. Don't be afraid to hack it apart and weld it back together if you feel like changing something.
