i do not do a root pass on collectors just out of speed. i think it is not really needed and i can finish the collector faster.

i do a root pass on pipe to pipe like runners of manifolds and what not. but if you have a lil bit of a gap don't be afraid to put some filler in on the first pass to keep from burning through.

also how far are you traveling at one time? along with speed?

when i do a weld on a runner. i go maybe 1/2" then switch to the other side and do another 1/2" twice. then set it in front of a fan to cool for a min or to. then repeat till done.

also what size filler are you useing? i use 1/16th.

now to talk about the amps. you can see it is hot by how far out the haz stretches out. eather your moving very slow or useing to much heat.

thanks for the replies.

if you go back to the first pictures of the root pass, side 1 was 2 weld beads, side 2 was 1 weld bead. then towards the top it was another maybe 1/4" for each side, then i did the top

im not sure how fast im moving, but i just wait for the puddle to go and i just try to maintain a consistent puddle size.

this is .045 filler

what kind of penetration should i be seeing? i think if i made a larger bevel i would have had full penetration. then i'd also be able to notch down the heat. what amps do you usually run for sch40 pipe?

i don't get full penitration on collectors, i guess inever really tryed to get it as i don't think it is needed. i don't use sch 40, but on sch 10 ss i set my sync 200 at about 90 amps and work the pedal. so i use around 60-70 ish amps, but i move quite fast. if i weld i collector i prolly weld it in 3 welds or 3rds. to keep heat down.

try 1/16th filler it will help get that rom of dime look as it will deposit more filler at one time. also when you ad filler it cools the weld. so if you use a lil bigger filler it might keep the weld from geting so hot as you don't have a pedal right?, to let off the amps a bit when it gets hot.

this thread is very informative. It looks like you're improving greatly after every iteration. Keep up the good work!

yah i noticed as you deposit filler it cools the puddle. i actually started trying tig on .035 and was suggested to go atleast .045 if not 1/16th. so right now i've got a ton of .045 so i'll keep playing with this to see if i can't improve on it.

yeah i don't have a peddle on this setup but i'd love to try and build one like someone posted earlier. especially if it means i don't have to scratch start the weld anymore. thats a huge PITA because you get the tungsten dirty everytime.

i still want to look into buying a gas lense setup. a whole complete setup is still less than 40 bucks and i hear it makes a hell of an improvement.

some practice welding on the scrap slices from the last collector.

this is my first time tigging sch40 pipe together with .045.

bevel,wirewheel and rubbing alcohol

root pass no filler

back side on root pass

1 pass with filler. i couldn't get into the rythm at all.

backside of filler pass

Odd thing happened while welding, i watched my gas make a "jet stream". it looked as if i had a fan blowing towards me. i've never seen this happen? i was welding ontop of two magnets(helping hold down the peice) if that makes any difference. but im pretty sure thats what led to the contaimination you see in the weld.

overall: looks pretty crappy.

Leave a small gap when you tack the two pieces together. You'll never get full penetration butting them right up against each other unless you bevel both sides at a 45° angle.

I've heard that magnets will affect the arc, so I've never used them. One tack on each end will hold it in place.

when i weld runners together i have a pretty good bevel. this way i can get 100% penitration easy without overheating. try puting a big bevel on the pipes next time and the penitration issue should be solved.
