I just had to do some -12an fittings in a fuel tank sump and it was a straight travel affair due to space and impairment of movement.

Do you have any pic's of this?

practise your welds on scrap metal. clean the area good and weld away. I think you move to fast wile welding.

Collector attempt #2

My dad was lucky enough to get some scrap 1.5" sch40 pipe.about 10 feet of it freshly sandblasted

slicing it up on my "jig" haha

another good fitment

snky snky

A little bevel

After beveling, wirewheeling, and wiped with rubbing alcohol

Root pass no filler

Side 1

Sh$% tack weld on side 2 broke. had to vice it back together and retack.

Side 2

not fully penetrating on the root passes tho. idk if i need more heat or just go slower?

This happened once after a weld, as soon as i turned off the gas it went blue. i think the tungsten was too hot when i turned the gas off.

Side 2 root pass done

Side 1 root pass done

The top on the root pass. ugh..still not good. it wont form a puddle forever and then as soon as i start moving at the top it burns it up extremely fast.

1 pass with filler side 2

1 pass with filler side 1

top with filler

end result from the inside

It definitely came out alot better than the first one. i think cleanliness and the thicker material helped alot with that one. but also learning new tricks from everyone's comments. that helped a lot. i made sure to keep the tungsten out only about 1/16", always ground the tungsten in parallel, cleaned and beveled the material like suggested kept consistent speed etc etc.

Please leave your comments on this second attempt!!

thanks guys!

you do not need to do a root pass on collector's. and i think you are still using to much heat, based of your haz it looks very hot.

you still need to work on your consistency with adding the filler, this will take time as i still strugle with this after 1 year.

go get some plate say 1/8th inch stainless and bevel it a good amount and go at it. just do 1 pass with filler and worry about your technique not color or whatever.

i prefer ss over mild as i don't like how the welds turn out on mild. but that is just my personal preference.

once you prefect the flat plate wedls then try another collector.

hmm, well what are your thoughts on the penetration? im not seeing much of anything on the inside of the collector.

the welding on this 1.5" sch40 collector was done at 65-75amps. i would adjust it to see if it felt better hotter or colder. but i think most of the time 70amps felt good.

is that too hot?

EDIT: also, when is a root pass appropriate if not here? i thought it was a good idea to do on thicker metal such as sch40?

thanks,

it looks to me like you are now making something that will hold. its just up to the amount you practice now.
