yeah it melts foam insulation but it doesn't have any affects on great stuff foam

hahah i also fix boats..but here is what i do to make little ---- i take floral foam and make it into the shape i want and after that put dry wall plaster all over it ( i know it ghetto but it works ) because its cheap..you could also use body filler it gets a little expensive, but anyway after the filler or plaster drys sand it down with a really fine grit sand paper untill its really smooth, after that get a spray gun and shoot a good coat of laquer over top of it ( make sure you get every little spot possible or the fiberglass will stick ) then lay the fiberglass mat i always dip the mat into the resin then put it on, this way you can smooth it out and get out the air bubbles, it will take alot of extra time off sanding and stuff, then let it cure for a few hours...after its dry take gas like sailman said pour it down the tube as the gas eats the foam the plaster will become mooshy so it should come off and if it doesnt just stick something into it and it will chip away rather easy because the laquer acts as a release and if it has nothing to support it, then it will just kinda fall off...make sure you get it all if you dont you will suck it up into you engine...if you dont want to use foam you also could use balsa wood for model airplanes make a skeleton of what you ar making then glue screen to it..then place plaster over it..then do all the fiberglass bullshit and when its done drying poke out the balsa wood and then peel off the plaster from the inside( the screen makes it a little eaiser to remove )..hope i helped you out a little bit

another quick question,
i want to make a sunroof plug, a friend told me that i should make a fiberglass mold of a stock eg hatch roof that doesn't have a sunroof so that it will follow the roof lines better, just the area of the roof where my sunroof is. sounds liek a good idea but what would i need to do to get it not to stick to the roof of my friends car and ---- up the paint? was thinking about just putting a few coats of wax in the area that i will be laying the fiberglass and resin, think that will work?

its funny you brought this up.. i had just recently bought a new front bumper off ebay.. some knock-off mugen style bumper for my crx.. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=36475 (the one i had i hated) it was fiberglass and thats what i wanted, cause i wanted to make the opening in the front larger to fit my intercooler. and i new that if it needed work, it would be much easeyer then starting with eurathane.

well upon arrival the bumper did not fit well at all.. i needed to do so much work on it.

this was my first time ever working with fiberglass. what i did first was do a few little experiments to see how the fiberglass worked, hardened, the strength, how well it could be sanded ect.


this is how the bumper looked when i got it



after test fits on my car, i made notes on paper and the bumper itself to see what needed to be cut and added on.
this is after i cut the openeing to make way for the JRC 8 inch IC



then i made some molds on the sides(the part that was not even close to fitting) with some duct tape, cardboard, and plastic. and added one strip of fiberglass to get a good mold.. then later added 4 more strips to the back side(inside of the bumper) to give it strength









here it is on my car.. fits awesome now, i realy was pretty proud of myself because it came out great. ---- it fits better then the OEM one did haha







its not completely done, and still needs alot of sanding/more cutting/fiberglassing in the opening part. but it was a good experience, i have about 12 hours just in fiberglassing/mounting/fitment alone in this bumper. but it was worth it imo

i never realized just how strong fiberglass can be when you put on several layers.. the ***** like bullet proof.
i think next i'm gonna try a full fiberglass intake manifold

my best advise for you is to just do some little experiments first with it, to see just how it works. the hardener, the sanding, the molding ect ect..
its really easyer then you might think. just have fun with it
