What's crackin HMT? I joined because I have dreams of boosting this car once I get it running. But until then, I'll just post pics of the fabrication work I've done to get this D16A1 engine mounted into my 1978 Honda Civic Hatchback. I'll try to limit the material here to just the pics that show the fabrication aspect of building my custom motor mounts. Here goes with the pics. All comments welcomed.

The last pics are of the new rear mount, since the first prototype flexes too much. I figure the hockey pucks should be solid :6

This build has been postponed since I'm in the process of buying a house, but once I get moved in, this project will be my #1 priority.

Everything looks pretty good except that driver side engine mount looks kinda flimsy. Maybe it's just the pics but what gauge sheet metal is that cause it just looks pretty thin. Maybe just box it together.

Re: Custom Motah Swap. 56K is gay, mmkay?

Have you looked at how thin the sheetmetal is on stock mounts? I'm about double that. The pics are deceiving, but believe me, that mount is strong as hell. The rear mount is another story... :8
But I guess the true test will be when it's running and I romp the ---- out of it :S

your on hondaswap too, right? I remember reading about this before. Nice work. lol I saw an attempt of what you're doing in the junkyard last month-dont let yours end up there.

what do you need? If it hasnt been crushed yet I'd be glad to snag some ---- for you. Make me a list and I'll see what I can do.

Re: Custom Motah Swap. 56K is gay, mmkay?

Wow, it really depends whats left of it. If it's not rusted to ----, you could buy it and part it out on www.1stgencivic.org they treat 1st gen parts like solid gold, so you would more than likely make a nice profit. These cars are getting harder and harder to find.

good job man. Looks like a fun project. That car should move pretty nicely considering how light it is.

Yayaya, This was my first attempt at welding anything, so if something breaks, I'll rebuild it.

wow, that is just amazing. a friend of mine has/had a first gen that wasnt running. cancered to hell and back though. one thing is for sure, any other motor than stock in the bitch and your asking for big trouble. light as hell and plenty of power from a b series like you have. ---- even a stout d would make that little car move. cant wait to see what comes of this civic. looks like its gonna be one hell of a blast to drive.

It is a D-series. And yeah, the car weighs like 1400 lbs :o
I have been hearing a lot of ---- about how my mounts won't be strong enough, but when I compare them to the stock mounts, they seem way beefier. To my knowledge, stock mounts will handle the 120hp this engine makes just fine, so why wouldn't mine? This is of course assuming my birdshit welds don't break.

birdshit welds is exactly why im concerned haha. you could have 1" thick plates there, but if they are barely penetrated to the frame it'll still pop right off.

go back over the mounts. maybe double plate it all.

better to be safe then sorry

goodluck,

-Luke

klyph 06-18-2007 07:24 PM

Re: Custom Motah Swap. 56K is gay, mmkay?

I'm positive that I got good penetration. I tacked the plates on then hit them with a torch until it was a dull red, then welded a bead on both sides. After the first pass, it was glowing red hot and that's when I welded the other side. The reason the welds look like birdshit is because I went over them slowly to build up enough heat for good penetration. My welder is a shitty little 110v on maximum amperage with the wire speed as low as I can get it without just blowing ---- everywhere, but a torch preheat and going slowly should give the welds adequate strength. If they don't, Oh well, but I'm NOT doing it again if I don't have to.

Looks really good man, makes me want to dig into an old Honda and do some custom ----, keep it up :y

E-b0la 06-18-2007 10:23 PM

Re: Custom Motah Swap. 56K is gay, mmkay?

Even with a 110v welder you shouldn't have to preheat the frame rail or that (what looks to be) 1/8" steel. That ---- is pretty thin. All that heat probably work hardened the mounts and the frame, making it hard yet brittle. I just hope a sudden shock, like dumping the clutch or something, doesn't snap them. It'll probably hold though. You'd be surprised how much even a small tack could hold.

I love it ;D. Hey I thought I saw this on d-series.org. So when will it be done?
