The burn comes from the light. You need to cover up ALL skin that's exposed to the arc light, at least until you learn a bit better how succeptible YOU are to it, and on what areas of your body. You'll find out in time that you may or may not be very sensitive to the light, or may not be....just like being in the sun. Some burn easy, some don't. Also, you will find that the areas like the underside of your arms and neck, where skin is softer will typically burn easier.
Personally, I usually wear gloves and a short sleeve shirt, but every now and then I'll bet burned on the inside of my biceps, but not often at all. I usually position arm so that side doesn't get exposed.
oh....and be careful with galvanized. NEVER try to burn the coating off, or you could add your list to the hundreds that have died from it. if you weld it, keep good ventilation and maybe use a respirator that's approved for it. It's never good to breathe any welding fumes, although some amount will be unavoidable. So, don't put your head right in the plume of smoke when welding.

It's cheaper than a tanning bed... people ask me all the time why just my arms and face are so tan i the winter. but ya if you burn easy in the sun cover up and if not ---- it, a helmet is a must, if you watch the arc for more than a couple seconds at a time you will get arcburn, the best why to decribe the feeling is like a handfull of sand in your eyes.
