Attempt at fiberglass work

7 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, something else I decided to try lately. A few of you who've actually worked with fiberglass will probably point and laugh, but hey I'm trying and it's been fun so far.

I'm working on my next bike project, basically it'll be my version of Roland Sands' No Regrets bike. But mine will be turbocharged.

Anyway, as a start to the project, I decided to try building my own tail section, check the pics and let me know whatcha think:

Took a bunch of foam blocks and glued them together, then shaped out the tail where I wanted it, in the first pictures the cowl section was too tall, I ended up shaping it a bit more:

Here's how it looks now with one fiberglass layer:

Anyway, it's a work in progress, not sure if I'm going to end up using it or not, but I'm having fun working with it, and I'll definitely post up a more detailed build log once this project really gets rolling.

thanks
Sky

The glass work isn't that bad, but personally I think that would look slightly gaudi for a tail section.

Perhaps....

There is a fair amount of stuff going on there, but I wanted the low wide look to it because the motor and swingarm are both so wide I wanted the bike to look even.

I started out trying to replicate the new Ducati tail, then I mixed in the ZX6R cowl section, then it just shaped into whatever it could and looked like a 1000RR tail mix, so now it's a complete homogolation.

Yeah. You also have the full look of the bike in your head. I can't tell where you're going with it from just the tail section because it's so very out of context alone like that. I'm sure it will come together.

Did you have to coat the foam with anything before glassing over it? I've done a fair amount of fiberglass work on boats, but not over foam like that. Also if you plan to put several layers of glass, it would be better to do them all at once. Less sanding and you'll get a stronger part.

Thanks for all the positive comments guys I appreciate it.

No I didn't put anything over the foam. I tried to wrap it first with either tinfoil or saran-wrap, both failed miserably. I thought I would have to wrap it because I thought the resin would make it react adversely, but I did a test sample and it had no effect, so I just glassed right over the top of it.

Thanks for the tip on doing multiple layers at once, I'll put that to use soon.

Re: Attempt at fiberglass work

i wouldnt have left the foam in there myself. i would have made the mold from foam, then cut the mold in half horizantally and made 2 parts, then bond them together

people use that floral foam for making molds all the time. it works well

+1 on the multiple layers. what are you using for resin. some of them you have to be careful with cause too much at once will start a fire. if you have any questions let me know, i put fiberglass and carbon fiber planes back together after they crash.

this will give you somewhat of an idea of what i do
