Attempt at fiberglass work
7 Attachment(s)
Hey guys, something else I decided to try lately. A few of you who've actually worked with fiberglass will probably point and laugh, but hey I'm trying and it's been fun so far.
I'm working on my next bike project, basically it'll be my version of Roland Sands' No Regrets bike. But mine will be turbocharged. Anyway, as a start to the project, I decided to try building my own tail section, check the pics and let me know whatcha think: Took a bunch of foam blocks and glued them together, then shaped out the tail where I wanted it, in the first pictures the cowl section was too tall, I ended up shaping it a bit more: Attachment 12739 Attachment 12740 Here's how it looks now with one fiberglass layer: Attachment 12741 Attachment 12742 Attachment 12743 Attachment 12744 Attachment 12745 Anyway, it's a work in progress, not sure if I'm going to end up using it or not, but I'm having fun working with it, and I'll definitely post up a more detailed build log once this project really gets rolling. thanks Sky |
Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
The glass work isn't that bad, but personally I think that would look slightly gaudi for a tail section.

Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
Perhaps....
There is a fair amount of stuff going on there, but I wanted the low wide look to it because the motor and swingarm are both so wide I wanted the bike to look even. I started out trying to replicate the new Ducati tail, then I mixed in the ZX6R cowl section, then it just shaped into whatever it could and looked like a 1000RR tail mix, so now it's a complete homogolation. |
Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
Yeah. You also have the full look of the bike in your head. I can't tell where you're going with it from just the tail section because it's so very out of context alone like that. I'm sure it will come together.

You're talented. cant wait to see what it ends up like. :y

Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
Did you have to coat the foam with anything before glassing over it? I've done a fair amount of fiberglass work on boats, but not over foam like that. Also if you plan to put several layers of glass, it would be better to do them all at once. Less sanding and you'll get a stronger part.

Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
Thanks for all the positive comments guys I appreciate it.
No I didn't put anything over the foam. I tried to wrap it first with either tinfoil or saran-wrap, both failed miserably. I thought I would have to wrap it because I thought the resin would make it react adversely, but I did a test sample and it had no effect, so I just glassed right over the top of it. Thanks for the tip on doing multiple layers at once, I'll put that to use soon. |
Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
i wouldnt have left the foam in there myself. i would have made the mold from foam, then cut the mold in half horizantally and made 2 parts, then bond them together
people use that floral foam for making molds all the time. it works well +1 on the multiple layers. what are you using for resin. some of them you have to be careful with cause too much at once will start a fire. if you have any questions let me know, i put fiberglass and carbon fiber planes back together after they crash. this will give you somewhat of an idea of what i do https://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/...692#msg1059692 |
Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
coooolness. did a figerbglass plane one time, it was a bitch!
what'cha using for a resin? |
Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
Looks like a spaceship! Fiberglass sucks but nice to know how to do and really pretty easy.

I have only used FiberGlas Evercoat Marine Grade Resin, never ever had a fire, but did have a few batches not kick over when the sun went down.
My exwifes second husband worked there so I got my resin and hardener for free. Subbox from 1997 Attachment 12714 |
Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
this is my favorite to use for most projects. there are some other things i use when i need more working time though

Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
I believe that's what my dad uses for his projects, I should pick some of that up.

Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
its cheap. i think its like $100 for that kit. i have never bought any myself, i always just make my projects at work and use their resin. thats what we use for the smaller repairs that certain resins arent required

Looking from the back of it. It looks like a spaceship. Did you test out to see if the foam with melt with anything such as gas so you can remove it? Looks good so far but I suck at working with fiberglass. That ---- is so messy.

I've heard that acetone will remove it, that might get even messier :) My concern was more that it would melt in contact with the resin itself, so I did a test piece and it didn't seem to affect it, so I just laid the fiberglass right over the top of it. |
Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
Ive removed foam from fiberglass using acetone before. Its turns into a bubble gum like substance, a bit of a pain in the ass but doable. Just make sure wherever you are doing it is well ventilated. You will also need quite a bit of acetone. Probably a full liter to do that.

Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
That ---- looks great. I've also thought about using that foam to glass over. Glad I know it works now.

Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
So what's the rest of the bike look like is what is the other bike for that matter?

Here's the only three parts I've got so far- the tank, tail section I'm making, and the buell swingarm: Attachment 11848 Attachment 11849 Attachment 11850 Attachment 11851 Here's a shot of Roland's no regrets bike if you've never seen it: Attachment 11852 Attachment 11853 Thanks for checking it out, and I'll keep this thread updated as it moves along Sky |
Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
I thought about building a bike kinda like that after I saw it the first time
|
Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
Kinda reminds me of like most of the cars on that show "Living the Low Life", but in bike form. It's a bit too loud for me but still looks pretty cool.
|
Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
i just like the shape, not the rest. I would make that bike all black.
|
Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
Mine will be mostly black, but the tanks and tail will be Kawi green, and the tail will have white squares with black #13 in them.

Re: Attempt at fiberglass work
I used to own a 2007 zx6r and on of the things I like most about it was that rear. I think your rear fairing looks pretty decent but you should stretch it a little longer. You can't have width without length. I think I'd try cuttin right in the middle, add a 2-3 in piece in the blend it all together. That'd be f-in sweet looking.
