air tool noob. What bits do I need for grinding?
I got a little air compressor now and a die grinder.
Here's the situation: I got a stock exhaust manifold, cut off the runners but they were welded in such a way where part of them are still in the flange. I need to port out the openings in the head flange to match the gasket. what the hell are the name of the bits I need to remove metal with a die grinder? I feel like a retard asking. |

carbide?

Re: air tool noob. What bits do I need for grinding?
I am also a grinder noob. It would make sense though that you could go to a quality hardware store and tell them what you are doing and they could hook you up with the proper bits. Seems faster than asking ppl online.

carbide. Good ones are pricey but will last a lifetime. Better have a good compressor has grinders take tons of air
I prefer an eletric die grinder. But use what you have. |
Re: air tool noob. What bits do I need for grinding?
also you going to want a porting kit has well for clean up. Dont cheap out a kit will run around 50 bucks but will last forever and just nice to have

Also, some tips on when you do get the carbide cutters (or rotary files, as some still call them): SPIN them fast. As fast as the grinder you're using can go. When moving slow, they tend to dull quickly on stainless. It has something to do with the size of the "bite". USE EYE PROTECTION!!! IT HURTS BADLY! Always move the cutter on the piece in the opposite way of rotation, as in it rotates clockwise, so move it down onto the piece, and move the cutter left. Hard to explain. Reason is, sometimes the cutter will "walk" on youif you don't, meaning it will "bite" and move quickly in that direction, causing damage to whatever you're working on. Watch out for others in your work area, these will throw metal particles at high speeds for a short distance. After roughing is complete, use what Chris mentioned, the porting kit. It includes different size/shape/grit sanding rolls/drums. They allow a nicer finish presentation. Not needed, but you know... -josh- |
Re: air tool noob. What bits do I need for grinding?
Metabo Grinder, 700 series.
http://cgi.ebay.com/Metabo-Variable-...QQcmdZViewItem Then figure $20-25 per bit if you want them to last. |
Re: air tool noob. What bits do I need for grinding?
Eye protection and a mask when you do clean up. Last thing you want is a mouthtful of aluminum
Bosch makes some nice die grinders has well. Or if your poor harbor freight |
Re: air tool noob. What bits do I need for grinding?

I bought this: 4292A56 from mcmaster carr. It was like $20 shipped, and did wonders for my turbo mani.

Re: air tool noob. What bits do I need for grinding?
I just picked up a micro 1/8" air-powered die grinder to do some headwork with. My old clunky die grinder with my long porting bits is just too bulky for what I'm doing. Gonna try it out tomorrow. ;D 56,000 rpm's with a 2cfm usage @ 90psi ;)

Re: air tool noob. What bits do I need for grinding?
interesting. That's small enough for most smallish compressors to handle. I think my 30g unit's pump puts out like 7scfm @90psi

Re: air tool noob. What bits do I need for grinding?
Yes, small enough, many people would say, but trust me, that thing will get the air compressor charging all day. All that waiting for the air compressor to get fully recharge will drive you nuts!
I'd rather go electric. |
Re: air tool noob. What bits do I need for grinding?
Just buy a bigger compressor I love my 60gallon Ingersol-Rand. Bought it for $165 at a tag sale. :6 That and a $15 harbor freight die grinder, can't go wrong.
Yeah if you don't have a compressor to handle it go electric. |

I'd rather go electric. I still wait for the day I find a spare propane tank somewhere and tap it for air. something like a 120g reservoir would be piiiimp. |
Re: air tool noob. What bits do I need for grinding?
I hated the hf air grinder but it was cheap

I'm getting into diy porting too. I have a spare dpfi IM that I'm practicing on when I'm bored at work. I'll post some pics of my work that I did when I get a chance. edit* Here are some very good articles I just stumbled on. http://www.club240.com/forums/showthread.php?t=39204 http://www.sa-motorsports.com/diyport.aspx |

Re: air tool noob. What bits do I need for grinding?
I paid around $36 a couple years ago for somwehere between 5 and 7 double cut carbide burrs of various shapes on Ebay. They have treated me very well. I've ported heads, rotor housings, turbo manifolds, turbine housings, intake manifolds.....you name it. They aren't as sharp as they used to be but I've gotten well more than my moneys worth.
I use a die grinder and then finish things up with one of several dremels I have on tap. Flapper wheels work well for the finishing touches. |
