I'm making this turbo manifold for a guy and his beetle. We'll see how she all works out. Everything is just tacked up right now so...

Hopefully I'll get some better ones up later.

looks like a fun project man. good work too.

Atreidies 12-03-2009 09:59 PM

---- yeah!!! Street car or rail?

Snaglefast 12-03-2009 10:41 PM

Street car.

Atreidies 12-03-2009 10:44 PM

Nice. My first ride was a 69 fastback. Always wanted to put some power in one. Good luck and keep this thread updated!

n0ckter 12-08-2009 01:09 AM

that looks sweet, one thing id look into is a cylinder head temp gauge. after watching my dad meltdown more than a few drag bugs while driving them on the street it may be well worth it. it basicly tells you when the valves are ready to fall off (sorta like egt but not quite)

hondavtec4208 12-08-2009 01:58 AM

wow, that looks amazing man. you should to my exhaust for me :)

Snaglefast 12-09-2009 05:08 PM

Yeah, I'm building the setup but the guy has the temp sensors. I know what youre talking about. Not a big fan of air-cooled engines but each to their own.

taiajam 12-09-2009 06:43 PM

are those runners not a little bit to big in diamter?

Snaglefast 12-09-2009 10:23 PM

They are definitely large but hey it gives plenty to work wit when you want to go big. And that was his plan so I threw this together for him. The tubing diameter is 1 and 5/8ths inches. It'll be fine.

cherokeebuilder 12-10-2009 04:48 PM

you stole my idea.

a dude is rebuilding a air cooled vw flat 4 at my school and i thought a turboed one would be cool. this is last week. and now i get to see it happen for real. I love you homemade turbo. other ---- im googleing is how to efi a flat 4, buick supercharged 3800 swaps, turboed jeeps, and new ideas to be the first dude who did a cool vehicle mod.

how much heat can a aircooled vw engine handle? how do you upgrade an air cooled, cooling system, lol?

Snaglefast 12-11-2009 02:16 PM

Talk to the guy who's rebuiling it he probably knows. I'm not quite sure. It's not something ive looked into. Is his name Matt and does he go to msu by chance?

cherokeebuilder 12-11-2009 05:02 PM

dont know your dude

i go to anoka tech. the dude rebuilding the engine aint upgrading it. just replacing parts. but i thought of turboing one when i looked at his engine on the stand. so i started searching the web. i found a few kits on line but i just wanted to read someones build thread cuz i wanted to know how its done to a flat 4 and also efi conversion but the closest iv found so far is this thread.

Snaglefast 12-12-2009 02:54 PM

Haha. Well I guess I'll have to keep updating it then huh?

cherokeebuilder 12-12-2009 03:18 PM

yup

no ---- sherlock. now hurry up and whip that thing together and put the pics up!

Snaglefast 12-12-2009 03:35 PM

A demanding little ----! :p Alright. I had to chang the mounting position for the turbo.. Supergay! It's kinda hard to know where to put it without the car here. I'm moving all my ---- way up north so it might be sometime next week.

josh19wrc 12-16-2009 09:11 PM

on a side note, that is one bigassed crank pulley.

Snaglefast 12-17-2009 09:57 AM

It just looks big ;)

Atreidies 12-17-2009 11:08 AM

That's what she said. :(

i'm not sure on how much heat they can handle, but to upgrade the cooling they basically set up a remote oil filter with a cooler. (stock aircooled vw's don't have a traditional oil filter, there's a small screen on the inlet of the oil pump)

this is actually an old renault running a vw motor/tranny (don't know exact specs though)

pretty cool.

Good fabrication.

hard2obtain 03-06-2010 07:30 PM

WTF that is awesome !!!!

Love that T-bird turbo

texinteg 03-07-2010 06:12 PM

Looks like some nice work. those old air cooled will haul with the right turbo setup.

questor 07-11-2010 02:34 PM

Looks great!

How much do the turbo manifold pipes hang below the oil sump? Did you have to adjust or modify the VW rear suspension to adapt for turbo use?

How has the turbo held up under hot Summer conditions? Does this turbo have a Stage I carbon seal or a standard dynamic seal?

turboglenn 07-15-2010 12:03 AM

That should be one mean beetle :) I love the old 2180's , but i've never been in a turbo oldschool beetle but i bet it's gonna be fun !!!

I basically just fabbed up the manifold and whatnot. I built it so it does not hang lower than the stock exhaust. So there shouldn't be any clearance issues. The turbo is a stock SVO mustang turbo. I'm not sure on the type of seal. It's been a while since I've messed with that thing. Why would hot summer conditions matter? It's not people only run their turboed cars in the cool conditions.

texinteg 07-22-2010 08:18 PM

I need to find one of those.

Snaglefast 07-23-2010 12:09 AM

That's pretty vague. What? Beetle,turbo,manifold.....?

DreamworldUC 10-27-2010 11:42 AM

Good fab work
