Re: 1st welds ever
decent welds for a newbie, just need some practice, get a good pair of welding gloves, steady the tip with your left hand (if your right handed) and take it at a nice easy pace, dont be afraid to take it kinda slow.. i dont know how those units work but when i was welding at my last job we always had our feed speed pretty high and turned it up anytime we turned up the heat
take the heat down about 1/4 and put the speed to 5 or 6 and see how you do, just play with the settings till you find something you like, then kill anyone who changes it at work we were lucky enough to have our own machines and very rarely switched with other people so our settings were always like we liked em sucked welding 8 hours a day in a unheated warehouse when it was 2 degrees outside though :l |
Re: 1st welds ever
Also if you are using a spool of flux wire that came with the welder go and get some better stuff. Just keep the spool that came with it for incase you run out and have to have some. Pick up some from a local welding suppy house or even Lowes and Home Depot or what ever large DIY center should have some better stuff.

Well first, when you weld you keep a steady speed, dont go fast then slow keep your hands moving at a good pace, and try to move ahead, stop, move ahead stop dont just go. Oh, and weld in a straight line ;)

Re: 1st welds ever
ya. those welds are on som4e exhaust pipe and a L-bracket i had lying around. thats with a hand held mask and 1 hand welding with the wire that came from the machine. im almost positive i could do 2x better with both hands and a decent mask. yes its a princess welder. thought what the hell, it was cheapest for what we needed it for, and its gas ready if i ever buy a gas bottle.
im mostly going to use it for my charge piping/exhaust work. seems to be a decent welder so far :6 thanks for the tips. |
Re: 1st welds ever
Get an auto helmet. Having a second hand to hold a part, or help steady the tip is a major help!
