The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
Seen a lot of people making their own log mani's on here so I figured I'd give it shot. This will be a minor upgrade from the HF manifold I was going to use, so I didn't want to spend a whole lot of money on it.
Brace yourselves... Home Depot plumbing elbows and tees. ~$7 Head Flange from Weir Technologies ~$20 T25 Flange from Weir ~$10 Flanges are in the mail, will finish up when they arrive. Conception: http://terpconnect.umd.edu/~cmgreen/Mani/1.JPG The goal; A lot of grinding required: http://terpconnect.umd.edu/~cmgreen/Mani/2.JPG After welding; Flux Core Chinese Mig FTMFW!: http://terpconnect.umd.edu/~cmgreen/Mani/3.JPG Gnarliest weld: http://terpconnect.umd.edu/~cmgreen/Mani/4.JPG For those of you who don't know, behold the glory that is sandblasting. Takes things that look like crap and makes them awesome. I'm also convinced sandblasting can fix ANYthing... but I digress: http://terpconnect.umd.edu/~cmgreen/Mani/5.JPG Spatter up! http://terpconnect.umd.edu/~cmgreen/Mani/6.JPG An inside view: http://terpconnect.umd.edu/~cmgreen/Mani/7.JPG Thoughts, suggestions, praises, and critiques welcome! |
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
the threads add turbulance, helping the exhaust pulses merge into one as they enter the turbo
|
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
True HMT madness!! :y
|
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
yes, china cast ftw.

Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
I like, but if you dont have the head flange how do you know your spacing between the runners is correct?

The real beauty of this is that everything is screwed together, even the tees have a 1/2" length of a close nipple in between them. Even if my welds were total ----, the thing would still hold itself together and decently maintain pressure. |
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
i would change your user name if i were u!!

Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
i like it. wish i woulda gone this route. my life would be much better right now.

Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
i have always wanted to make one of those for some reason, but i got a really nice cast one. maybe i will get to make one for someone else one day

Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
this thread makes me all warm inside.
pipe fittings ftw. |
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
True hmt, Ilike :y

Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
Im interested ot see whta happens when you go to put the flanges on. I see alot of grinding and fugly wlding. >:D

Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
haha thats crazy looking. Its shame they don't sell weld-elbows at lowes/home depot

Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
can you oxy/accet cut cast metal?
i had to buy a hole saw for my SS 304 log mani |

Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
^^^ lol
are the 90s galvanized?? |
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
nah no galvanized. In the plumbing industry they call it "black steel" but I'm pretty sure its just a mild steel.
Got the flanges welded on yesterday, will post up pics later today. Turned out pretty good. |

Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
Been a busy weekend! Got the manifold made, then my buddies and I decided we should try and get the turbo spinning this weekend too. So we made a down pipe, ran the oil feed and return lines, and fired it up. I'll let the pictures do the talking.

There was a LOT of smoke when we first started it up. Drove around on it a bit and the manifold started turning blue as seen in the last pics, but no worries. Had to make a copper gasket for the downpipe to seal it to the turbo better. It works pretty well, but could stand to be widened a bit more. Have the wastegate held open so the turbo won't spool too fast while driving. I'll just try to keep it under 4k rpms and part throttle. Downpipe is leaky as anything where it meets the cat, but I didn't spend a lot of time on that since I'll probably want to "upgrade" the cat. Any suggestions for a temporary fix? |
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
Just grab a hammer and give the down pipe a little smack untill it clears your bleader screw on your clutch master cyl.

i had to buy a hole saw for my SS 304 log mani I made 4 cuts with the angle grinder. Two parallel to the manifold and one perpendicular on the left and one perpendicular on the right. The two parallel cuts were spaced according to the inside opening of the flange. The left and right cuts were spaced to the outer dimensions of the flange. Then I ground the parallel cuts to a flat-ish surface. Set the flange in between the left and right cuts and snug it against the parallel cuts and weld in place. Had a good weld area all the way around. One spot of trouble was that some of the bolt holes on the flange slightly connected through to the inside of the manifold. I just welded over the backs of the offending holes to seal them up. That's the second bead on the left side of the flange that you can see. |
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
the smoke is probably nothing. a lot of times its from all of the body oils on the exhaust parts. it will burn off. if it never goes away, then start looking into it
|
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
hmt for sure
good work with that flange. i was thinking of doing something like that with my mani, but the extra height gained when recessing the flange into the log cost me some clearance i needed those straight copper oil lines? |
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
That is badass.
|
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
This thread is full of win. Looks great!! I love the copper oil line!
|
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
Great job.
I might look into something like this when it's time to put together a kit for myself. Keep this thread updated on how it's holding up ovet time. |
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
dude that is BAD ASS!!!
this is TRUE HMT style nice work man |
Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
That downpipe is sex also. I built one of these a long time ago. One of the best manifolds I have made so far ;)

good job on the mani, looks tits :6

Re: The $40 AC Compatible Log Manifold
Good job.
I made one out of pipe fittings. They're actually pretty close to the right space apart. |
