Will I need a BTM?

Will I need a BTM?
My setup to be put on my d16y7 is a 14b, with dsm 450's and a SMC 500. The turbo has a little leak so itll be a little lower than stock boost. Do you guys think I will need to use my btm? When usually do you need it. And how do you know if you need it? When detonating or pinging will I be running lean? Or can it happen while running rich? Thanks.

Detonation can/will happen anytime. Retard your initial timing and listen carefuly. I don't use a BTM and I have been fine although I recently sent my ECU to get chipped for 1 degree per retard per 1 psi. This way I can set my timing a little bit more advanced for more bottom end power.

Re:Will I need a BTM?
Use a timing light to see how much your retarding. :P, but I think Dr. Boost said he's almost all the way retarded at the dizzy, but he could tell you more about that. Hey Dr. Boost, I have a question for you too now... Where are you getting the boost chip, I want to chip my ecu to automatically retard timing under boost also. It would be much easier.

Re:Will I need a BTM?
Joseph Davis is chipping it. He has an ad in the classified section for it. He is also putting launch control in it. I can't wait. https://www.homemadeturbo.com/forum/...;threadid=6170
I have my timing almost all the way retarded at the distributor. I could probably advance it a bit more, but right now I don't have any detonation and it runs strong. When I get my ECU back from Joseph I will advance it a little.

Re:Will I need a BTM?
Everybody had there own theory about how much retard per psi. I am going to try 1 degree per 1 psi. I have heard people using as much as 3 degrees per psi. You will have to put the BTM on and see if it detonates. That will tell you if it will work or not. If my timing is advanced it will detonate before I even hit boost so a BTM wouldn't stop that. Most likely you will have to retard it at least a little at the distributor.

Re:Will I need a BTM?
Take it for a drive. It won't blow your motor up in one rev. Listen very carefully. If it starts to ping and ----, let off and adjust the timing. Don't beat the hell out of it when it is pinging either. Take it easy until you get it to go through the rpm's at full boost without pinging.
