It basically tells you an accurate air/fuel ratio. Air/fuel ratios are important not only to gaining peak performance but also for saftely of the engine. It will tell you whether you are running rich or lean...lean being the worse of the two. Thats a very simple explanation of it.
Normal 02 sensors that we hook gauges to are simply not very accurate, there more of an "oh ----" meter that will tell you if you suddenly went lean.

a narrowband o2 can only read around 14.7/1(stoich) this is the point which a natural asperated engine makes the most power while being the most fuel efficent. on the other hand a wide band o2 can read form 10.0/1 - freeair, this is useful because a boosted engines ideal a/f ratio is around 11.5/1-12.5/1 because a higher a/f ratio will cause the engine to run hotter which can be harmful to the pistons and other parts. so there is really no way to tune with a narrow band o2 because outside of 14.7/1 a/f ratio it is not accurate at all. so you can either just blindly tune or go get it dynoed and they will stick a wideband o2 up ur tail pipe.
