Default SAFC/Timing ??'s

I recently read somewhere that when using the AFC Hack set at -40% it'll screw with the ignition timing. True or b.s. and what is best (ie. cost-effective) way to correct. Also, my bro has a 97 miata he wants to custom turbo, any advice, links or forums ya'll can recommend? Thanks.
