Default pm6 obd1/obd2?

i know that alot of people here are using ghettodyne or similar program and chipping their ecu's for turbo. a little info about my car. i have a 90crx w/ d16z6/y8 swap, but i am using a pm6 ecu and external vtec controller (VAFC). i keep hearing that its better to convert to obd1 d16z6 ecu, because the fuel/ignition maps are better. my question is this... how hard would it be to change the fuel/ignition values in a pm6 ecu to the fuel/ignition values of a sohc vtec ecu? would this even be worth it? i know that you need to socket/chip your ecu. i am also familiar with ghettodyne... but i dont know what any of the values in the tables mean, or how i should alter them. where would i learn how to alter these values? i have tried reading the pgmfi forums... but i just get really confused. any help would be greatly appreciated. also, if anybody has a .bin file for this application, that would be great so i can compare that file with the stock pm6 file - but if you could also explain how/where/why you changed the fuel ignition values that would be greater. id like to learn more than just getting somebody else's bin files.

I'll see if I can explain this...starting with the numbers in the fuel/timing maps.

For the fuel maps, the numbers indicate how long the ECU will hold the injector pintle open in milliseconds, so at (X)rpm and (Y) vaccum, hold open injector for (Z) milliseconds. It's important to note that the ECU has no idea how much fuel is being injected, just how long it's spraying the gas. This is why raising the fuel pressure is a cheap and easy way to enrich your mixture. The ecu is still holding the pintle open just as long, but since there's more pressure, more fuel is injected. By leaving your fuel pressure at stock and increasing the duration the injectors are held open (modifying the maps) you have the same end result, more fuel.

For timing maps, numbers indicate degrees of ignition advance at (X)rpm and (Y) vaccum. Increase the numbers, and you advance timing at those coordinates. Decrease, and you retard your timing respectavely.

Now, on VTEC ecu's, there are two seperate sets of fuel and ignition maps, one set for while in VTEC, and one for when you're not. The best solution for using VTEC maps with a non-VTEC ECU is to splice the VTEC maps into the non-vtec maps using VTEC maps above VTEC engagement, and non VTEC maps below that. In other words:

1. Open your base GHD bin in Ghettodyne
2. Open your stock P28 bin with an OBD1 editor (Crome, ERM)
3. Assuming you're engaging VTEC at 4800 RPM, copy the values for non-vtec fuel and ignition tables from the P28 bin to the GHD bin up to 4800 RPM. For the rest of the RPM range (4800-7400) copy the values from the vtec maps of the p28 to the GHD bin. This way, below 4800 RPM (not in VTEC) you'll be using non-VTEC values for fuel and ignition, and once you cross 4800 RPM (and your VAFC activates VTEC), you'll be using VTEC fuel and ignition maps for that motor.
4. Burn, enjoy!

Make sense?

Wow. This is why I sold my burner. This ---- is over my head. If I can't turn a wrench on it, I'm lost.

ok... i kinda get it. thanks for the explanation on what the fuel/ignition values mean in ghd in a way that even a noob like me can understand. a few more questions though. i noticed that the x/y values in ERM are different than ghettodyne, so i am not really sure how i would just transfer the tables. i got a p28 stock bin from pgmfi...but it doesn't open in ERM(compatible w/ p72,p74,p75 only). i tried to open it in ghd, but that didn't work either. also, i couldn't find the crome editor, although i was able to locate the crome forum. am i just fucked? i cant find an editor to open the p28 bin i found. would i be better off just trying to modify the stock pm6 fuel/ignition tables in ghd? if so, any guidelines on doing this without totally messing up the values and blowing up my car when i install the chip?

Nah man, you're far from fucked...I don't deal with ODB1 much, so sorry for the misinformation regarding ERM. Found this bin on PGMFI, it's already set up in the way I described in my first reply. It's a GHD 2.21 bin, so you should be good to go. Check it out and let me know if it works for you. -Z

thanks for the link . i still need to chip my ecu and buy a chip burner. i need to practice soldering/desoldering first, then save up for a chip burner. but when i do, that will be the first bin that i load.

Glad to help. If you get the Batronix, buy the kit, it was excellent experience for me. Don't fear the soldering iron, it's not kung fu, just takes a little practice.
www.jaycar.com.au Has some simple car related electronics kits, good practice material also, and you might something useful. -Z
