He just tuned a car for me last night, but for some reason I dont think he enjoys doing turboedit or any OBD0 cars that much.

well im planning on buying everything, with the ostrich its less bullshit just change while your there, to me its worth it to others its not, but its not necessary. with a burner, wideband, and dataloggin, with laptop you can get the job done.

well im kinda a noob at uberdata but reading all i can. If someone wants to chat and answer a few questions for me id be grateful. Im sure theyve been answered before I just need to find them. Im going obd1 upgrade. Ive already got my p06 ecu chpiied uberdata, obd0-obd1 harness complete. I need to add the 2 dizzy wires to my engine harness and Im curious about the 4 wire 02 sensor delete option? Ive got 2 02 sensors stock so that 4 wires. would I repin at the ecu harness or is it easier to just turn of the need for the other 2 wires with uberdata? Im going to be looking for a tuner in the next little bit but would like to chat with someone to make sure I get it all gravy so theres no issues when I go to tune. Ive read tuners hate that crap.

What I see all the time is people pulling the factory EPROM off the board before it's fully detached, and it takes a bunch of traces with it, damaging the ECU. It's really easy NOT to do this, but takes an extra three to six minutes of ------- around:

1) Make sure you have 90% of the solder removed. There will almost always be a little residual bit of solder still holding the pin to the pad/hole of the ECU, just make sure you've gotten as much as you can get consistently across the ECU. If it's hard to get one hole cleared, DO NOT keep dumping heat into the board with the iron as this ruins the ECU. Add a little bit more solder, and that will let the solder you can't quite get to wick up into your desoldering iron.

2) Take a super small pair of long tipped needle nose pliers, and wiggle each protruding pin on the bottom of the ECU back and forth, side to side. You may or may not hear a small pop and the pins should all wiggle pretty freely after the first gentle yank. Well, you've only freed half of the pins and freed the bottom side of the other half.

3) I use a slightly different pair of pliers, or a small flat screwdriver, to push at the pins from the top side. You just want to push aginst the outside flat of the pin towards the inside. Most of the pins will make a pop noise when you do this.

4) EPROM all but falls out.

It's the OBD1 stuff with the endless 1001 little holes that annoy the hell out of me, and with how pin #1 is sunk into the ground plane and disperses heat they are hard to get clean with a cheap desoldering iron. I stepped on the Hakko iron, and have been too cheap to replace it. I'd rather bitch than get the $150 tool that makes it gravy. I'm an idiot like that.

+ drinking and a dremel. hahaha

Im not partial to OBDO because I dont have a working Dlogging/maptracing ECU. Doing part throttle by watching A/F and a vacuum gauge is doable, just not likeable.
OBD1 for life.

Re: Need Washington tuner (Turbo Edit) !!!!!!!!!!!

I've been having wierdfuk wideband logging problems... then wierdfuk datalogging cable problems... then wierdfuk can't-get-ostrich-to-work-with-datalogging cable problems. For the last four months all I've done is hold the WB display, look at vac/boost/rpms, and get jiggy with it.

Takes about four times as long, doesn't it?

dave what is Dlogging/maptracing ECU.

Re: Need Washington tuner (Turbo Edit) !!!!!!!!!!!

Just buy the gear and do it yourself.I had never tuned any kind of engine management before and I got the Turbo Edit figured out.Just make little changes one thing at a time and watch the results.Ill admit it was probably not a max power tune but the car ran well and made good power so ---- it.Once you get all the gear you can help others and make money back that way.I just wish I could solder/de solder well enough to chip them myself.

Heh.

I charge twice that, because it's never just a tune. I always get into re-sorting the vehicle. And that's dirt cheap.

Re: Need Washington tuner (Turbo Edit) !!!!!!!!!!!

i guess in the end it will only allow me and him "if we buy everything" to help other whod be in the same boat as us, ---- i think on every single ecu job for the 4 motors ive had in my rex, thats been the hold up.

Re: Need Washington tuner (Turbo Edit) !!!!!!!!!!!

lol well i herd dave lee only charges 70$ so i was just throwing out a number..... but yea looks like im gonna have to buy all the gear and do it myself....even tho i dont really understand the "whole" tuneing thing yet. but yea once i learn im down for helping fellow hmt memebers in the area!

Re: Need Washington tuner (Turbo Edit) !!!!!!!!!!!

70? ---- i told him id give him 120 and still nothing back :6

Tom-Guy 01-09-2006 12:16 PM

Re: Need Washington tuner (Turbo Edit) !!!!!!!!!!!

If the car is correctly sorted, and a familiar configuration so I have a handy basemap that only needs a mild revision, and your ECU is already socketed, $70 would be a fair price for an easy street tune.

I always end up with the problem vehicles, wierd setups no one's ever heard of, and problems. Did I mention the problems? I rolled up on Trav-ASS' doorstep to tune the $25K '94 Pigtegra LS of Fury Saturday, and twelve hours later we had it put back together and running on his old tune, ready to hook up my gear and get started. I could be like most tuenars, and send the guy away, but all he's going to do is mis-install something or get someone who claims to know all about it to royally ---- everything up. If I'm going to tune a vehicle, it needs to be right, because I'm putting my name on it. I could be like Mase and knock out seven-eight vehicles in one day, sending some of the guys away, or I can wrench on and tune one a day. You also need some serious road time to get some areas of the part throttle maps perfect so the car really cranks out the mpg and doesn't have odd little stutters... hard to do that with 7-8 cars a day unless you're letting closed loop mask your laziness.

Takes twice to three times as long to get part throttle nailled as it does to tune to 18 psi... again, if you have a familiar setup (D16, DSM 450cc, T3 or 14b, etc) you can take a close basemap from, the part throttle and idle barely changes, but under boost VE roams around depending on system synamics. In that case, it takes longer to tune under boost, and you still aren't spending a lot of time on the vehicle. The fact 1001 lamers cruise around on bbka's map with success show how close things are... he runs a bit bigger turbo so the average guy runs a little safe rich.

Okay, babbling, that third cup of coffee was a bad idea.

Re: Need Washington tuner (Turbo Edit) !!!!!!!!!!!

well i dont think my car would be much of a problem to tune, socketed pm6,dsm450's, no codes, idles at 700 with my basemap and everything :)

nice, clean setup!!! is that an ls swap?... damn i wish myn was in!!! but i dont have a ------- job right now so its taking forever.....errr but anyways i was looking at laptops today and i have no idea what i should be looking for....all this laptop is goping to be used for is tuneing! nothing else....do i need a lot of memory??? i want to stay around the 100$ range if that is possible ive found a few on ebay but i have no idea if they are worth it??? heres a link http://cgi.ebay.com/HP-Omnibook-133-...QQcmdZViewItem its seems a lil cheap to me...so maybe its not good enough. lol

obd-1 owns you guys ;)

Re: Need Washington tuner (Turbo Edit) !!!!!!!!!!!

lol i know obd0 seems like it would be the first choice i dont understand why? hell i even have a obd1 ls dizzy, but if i get a ecu and harness wtf good is that gonna do its not gonna make my basemap any better :(

and ya its a ls swap, ive waited for over a year getting money together and parts, the first ls motor i had ol fat ---- blake up north sold me a fuckn trashed one, smoked worse then when i hotbox my car, so after 3 different heads on that pos motor, i found this one a b18a in umatitties oregon from a wrecked teggy, has 175psi comp and runs pretty good with my basemap in it, im also sporting the a cable gsr tranny, and the b20 valve cover because to me it looks the best. another pic
