i found a bunch of M27C256B-12F1 eproms in a store near my house for a fair price,

are they ok?

iv used only 29c256,

not sure, but compare this datasheet http://gamma.octopart.com/STMicroele...C256B-12F1.pdf with a chip that is known to work. Check things like pinouts, how they program, and how memory is accessed, speed etc. I think there used to be something in the wiki on pgmfi that went over chip requirements that might help you find out what to look for. Check one of the archives for it. Sorry not much of a help, but that's all I can think of how to find out.
