Laptop minimum Requirements for tunning?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I have decided to learn/do my own tunning, Damm it!!!! LOL.

So right now Im shopping for a good laptop do get the job done. Now I have seen a lot of them on ebay for cheap but before I buy I would like to know what to look for on a laptop.

Now I know that windows Vista is giving everybody problems so beeing that Im new to tunning, I dont need another headhache so Im going with Windows XP.

I probably will do dataloging and I also know I will need to plug a wideband, Is there anything else I will need to plug to the laptop for tunning?

It seems that the majority of laptops have two usb ports but I have seen a few that have three and four, What should I get?

Also what processor works better for tunning?
How fast (GHZ) minimum should I get?
How much memory (RAM) should I get?
Is thre a brand that I should stay away from?

Any other informantion regarding my buying a laptop please let me know, thank you.

I know I saw hundreds of them on ebay, know of any good seller on ebay or do you know of another place that sell good used laptops?

Thank you guys before hand since Im planing on getting mine this weekend.

You can get the job done with a P3, I have two Thinkpad T20 I maintain for tuning.

I *really* like my Thinkpad T61 with the dual core 2.4Ghz processor and 2 gigs of RAM. Seeing as how it's a magnesium-spaceframe-encased business machine for an industrial work environment, not only is it capable of being hit with a baseball bat but they are all XP compatible because no one wants to switch over to the bloated failure that is Vista... ESPECIALLY since 85% of the aftermarket is aimed at Windows 95 and DB9 serial ports. It does not fail, lag, freeze, hiccough, or glitch like most laptops do. It's only lack is universal to all modern laptops; no DB9 serial port. I have two different USB<-->serial converters, but they don't always work correctly, which is why I maintain the T20s I mentioned above.

You might want to look into a T30? IIRC they are 2+ Ghz P4, and support both USB 2.0 as well as come equipped with a DB9 serial port. I might be wrong about the serial port, so do your own legwork.

PS - 60-70% of tuners run Thinkpad T-series for a reason. Most laptops shatter like brittle plastic when dropped onto carpet from waist high. One of my T20s has a tiny chunk out of it's corner from an SRT4 running over it but it still works fine, and there are videos of Thinkpad being run over by trucks, etc. Panasonic Toughbooks are also awesome, but a bit pricier.

JD, I can get a NEW T61, T2330 dual core, 1gb of ram, but I'd up it to 2 GB, Win XP, $600 after ------- rebate.

Blundell has a T43 for tuning.........myself I like the thinkpoint nubile......plus the strong ass case is a plus.

Get on Lenovo's site and see what else they have for offer... www.lenovo.com

That price isn't great, IMO. You can get T61 with faster processors and the 15.4" widescreen in thr $750 range, then add in an ecoupon for 10% off and it's ~$80 more for a much faster machine after you figure in tax. Keep in mind you have to look at the LINUX laptops, and then you install XP over the Linux when you get it.
