It's called ESD...Electro-Static-Discharge. Congratulations...you just fucked your ecu. I've gotten into the habit of wearing ground strap wristbands whenever I do any electronics work (especially since the DOD and DOA is pretty strict when it concerns their electronic equipment lol)

All depends on if your body builds up a static charge. I climbed into my car today, reached over to pop my eprom out of the zif socket and brushed past my shift knob...zap. Glad it happened before I touched the ecu...so now I try to touch something metal on the car while I pull the chip. Do a search on ESD...it's a mofo.

If it works as a P06 with the jumper cut, then as a last resort just unsolder what you soldered in originally and install a new HC chip.

I always touch the chassis before touching the board, just in case.

Yeah that's what I was thinking the only thing left could be the HC helper chip. There's no real way to check continuity for that, and everything else checked out (caps, resistors, rom socket). I'll go try another HC chip, but even so it seems a little weird how the ecu can be fine and dandy with J1 cut but a total fuckbag with it reattached.

There's no limp mode, there's no loss of power, there's just a ------- cel that I'm sick of looking at.

Well I switched out HC chips and I've had no luck. What's really bothering me is the SRS light blinking with the service conn jumper in. When I don't have the jumper in the SRS light turns off after 6 or so seconds like it should. I guess I'm driving with a CEL on for a while till I get an ecu.

cutting j1 gets rid of all the work you just did so thats your problem from a logic point of view. If the use was taotally dead it wouldnt even start or throw the solid cel of hell

Right, my only thought is somehow the static caused some of the residue from my not so great desoldering job to arc or short out or something. Some of the pins broke on my riser for the rom latch but I dropped some little pieces of wire and soldered it in and checked conductivity and those are fine. If I blew a capacitor (which wouldn't have happened anyway because there isn't much current in static just lots of volts) there would be goo all over the place. I've tested all of the components I added in, including the vtec conversion parts except for the 3 prong transistor and 5 prong ic14 transistor because I wouldn't know what readings I should be getting, and have gotten nowhere. I think I'll go run the vtec wires and ground and see that would have any effect.
I'm pretty certain the ecu is not dead because it runs and drives and pulls to redline.. no limp mode.

Something incredible happened. I wired the solenoid and oil press and then put my p28 stock bin scalerd for 450's on the Atmel chip. Then I put the FooK map on the SST chip. I tried to start with FooK's first... no luck BUT no cel. Then the Atmel fired her right up. Atmel ftw! All I did was wire vtec and rub some alcohol on my board and picked some residue off. Thanks for the help guys, especially you, Bone :-* Ain't it great?

Clean the ------- board and keep static away, it might melt residue and cause a short in the HC chip. :y

I had the exact same problem before I put my car away for the winter, SRS light and all! I just gave up on the last ecu and chipped another over the winter. Hopefully I will have your luck! :o

Hey d00dz I got another problem. My speedometer has been acting up a lot lately. It's fine when I first start it up and drive it. 20 minutes into a drive however it begins to wobble a little bit. Then it gets worse. Then it drops to zero and sits. The ecy threw code 17 which is vss so I replaced it with a spare I had around. Now it's starting to do it the same with the same pattern. Think my speedometer is going down the drain? I thought maybe it could be heating up a bit, like my dad's Sonoma's radio, so I turned the heat on to pull heat off it but it didn't work. Then all of a sudden it went back up to the right speed and worked a bit, then died again some time later. Anyone have this happen to them before?

well with the cable driven speedo's when the cable is going thats what happens and you get the good ole codeage 17

Do 92-95 civics have cable driven speedometers? I'm thinking about just swapping the speedometer from another cluster I have, but it's unfortunately an hour away.

No...they're electronic with the vss on the trans.

That's what I thought considering I swapped it out for another one. Think it's the gauge ------- up? The weird thing is it doesn't do it when the car is first started, only a while into the drive.
