How necessary is the IAT?

In mine (98 d16y8) it was in the stock intake pipe, which I just removed, not the IM like on some cars. I'm converting over to obd1 and just wondered if I'm going to have to make a hole in my charge pipes to re-mount this thing. :-\ I just looked at the pinout, and sure enough, the obd1 has a pin for it also. How important is it to mount this thing, and how did you secure it in your charge piping?

;D ;D
Tuner Ive got a '99 y7,guys told me
to zip tie it to the firewall. The car
didnt exactly run properly. What i did was
extend the wires so i could put it where its
supposed to go,in the tube between the K@N
and the turbo, hence the name Intake Air Temp.
sensor. Not the charge pipes or the intake
because i tried those first.Yours might be
slightly different because mines OBD2B.

i would do the zip tie thing on an NA car, but i dont think i would do it on a turboed car :-\

so you think it's better to put in in the charge pipes or the intake pipe before the turbo? as far as mounting it, just drill a hole and find a grommet that it will fit snugly in, that's how it was on my cai, and it wasn't really that tight in there, but i never had problems with it.

Bah... stop half assing. Just because it's "homemadeturbo" doesn't mean it "halfassturbo".

Just drill a small hole in your charge pipes for the probe, then two small holes on either side for the screws. Put a bit of silicon around it to seal it. Done deal.

I ran this setup the year I had a SOHC turbo, never had an issue.

mine doesn't have screws, it's just a probe stuck in a grommet

Oooo... hrm, not sure then. Silicone should still hold it in there.

yeah, i didn't even think about it, but i guess the boost would blow it out if it was just stuck in a grommet :P

its not a good idea to put an air temp sensor BEFORE the turbo on a turbo car.
compressing air heats it up and an intercooler won't be able to get rid of all the heat in some cases; and it'll get rid of more heat in other cases.

put it right before the throttle body in your charge pipe.
