I tried desoldering braid, but it never worked well for me.

I just use a cheap 25W iron with a desoldering bulp, works perfectly for me. I just clam the ecu on it's side and go at it.

Easiest way to desolder a component is to use a side cutter to go through the IC's legs. Then use tweezers and a soldering iron to remove the legs from the solder. Then a little solder into the holes until it domes and suck it out with a desoldering pump.

it seems a little brutal to cut the chip off the board, but since your not going to re-use it, its alot quicker and you put less heat into the board.

Its how i do it everyday at work. I do it at home with a $15 iron and $20 desoldering pump.

i believe you're referring to the 'hakko 808' desoldering gun. i bought mine a long time ago so i don't really remember how much it was, but i think in the 200 dollar range. you will never use anything else ever again if you use one. hakko soldering irons and other products are the ---- too. i get all my hakko supplies and replacement parts from www.tequipment.net

I rock the Hakko 808 as well. Got it for $149. Back in the day I used a Weller 100SD desoldering gun and that thing was a POS.

The 808 is by far the best gun out there. Twin pumps, nice heat range and a shallow tip makes sure that it always gets the solder out and never plugs up.

I also use the 936 Soldering station.
