GOOD desoldering gun?
I was wacthing the intertune tv dvd and "bubba" had a F#$king SICK!!! desoldering gun that literally removed solder from PCB with merly a click of the trigger. Does anybody know what gun that was or recommend a good gun in the $200-$250maybe or less range?

Re: GOOD desoldering gun?
i just have a 100$ adjustable solder iron, and a vacum pen that sucks in solder.

Re: GOOD desoldering gun?
like that tube with a big ball on the end? How does that work? Haven't been to successful with the braid, but really only fucked with it for a sec. I'll have to give it another try on some old computer adapter cards.

Re: GOOD desoldering gun?
Google desoldering staion. I previously used a $400 desoldering station to do all my ecu work when i was at school but lately ive been using my $7.99 Radio Shack desoldering iron and i ------- love it. Im not the nicest to it so it needs a new tip but once things get going and i get a rythem down i can desolder a whole board in no time at all.

Re: GOOD desoldering gun?
I use and prefer the Xytronics stuff O0

Re: GOOD desoldering gun?
I still use desoldering braid :1
---- comes out clean though. |
Re: GOOD desoldering gun?
I do a small enough amount of them that the RadioShack one works okay. Hand can get a little tired, but no worries.
If you are doing some volume like Chris, then yeah go with a vacuum assist station. |

Re: GOOD desoldering gun?
I use the braid and it works great for me, if it gets a lil fussy i'll put some flux on it and it'll suck the solder out like a $10 french -----.

Re: GOOD desoldering gun?
I use a cheap 35 watt pen type iron and a spring loaded sucker from the Shack.

Re: GOOD desoldering gun?
I tried desoldering braid, but it never worked well for me.
I just use a cheap 25W iron with a desoldering bulp, works perfectly for me. I just clam the ecu on it's side and go at it. |
Re: GOOD desoldering gun?
Easiest way to desolder a component is to use a side cutter to go through the IC's legs. Then use tweezers and a soldering iron to remove the legs from the solder. Then a little solder into the holes until it domes and suck it out with a desoldering pump.
it seems a little brutal to cut the chip off the board, but since your not going to re-use it, its alot quicker and you put less heat into the board. Its how i do it everyday at work. I do it at home with a $15 iron and $20 desoldering pump. |
Re: GOOD desoldering gun?
i believe you're referring to the 'hakko 808' desoldering gun. i bought mine a long time ago so i don't really remember how much it was, but i think in the 200 dollar range. you will never use anything else ever again if you use one. hakko soldering irons and other products are the ---- too. i get all my hakko supplies and replacement parts from www.tequipment.net

I rock the Hakko 808 as well. Got it for $149. Back in the day I used a Weller 100SD desoldering gun and that thing was a POS. The 808 is by far the best gun out there. Twin pumps, nice heat range and a shallow tip makes sure that it always gets the solder out and never plugs up. I also use the 936 Soldering station. |
Re: GOOD desoldering gun?
