aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
i have pulled engines and not yelled "AHH ----" as may times as i just did soldering that damn thing, but i finished with only one 'serious' burn (one that will leave a mark) :-X so that brings up a question: you guys where gloves or something when doing this? or am i just a newbie?
anyway i took some pics with my shitty ass camera: http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...1/fa49a9e7.jpg http://www.imagestation.com/picture/...a/fa49a9ea.jpg i think i will start my new carrer as a photographer soon ;D so then i burn a program to a chip.....oh wait i dont have a burner :'( think i am going to get a Transtronics Romulator with real-time emulator.... |
Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
How many times have you soldered before? I took a class on soldering and I still don't think I'd trust myself to socket an ecu.
To answer your question, I usually don't wear gloves but that is a tight space to maneuver. I think gloves would get in the way. Its a toss-up. I never have worn gloves while soldering. |
Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
I've got scars from soldering, that's how good I am. I think my soldering gun is 110 watts or something obscene like that, I think I'll get a cheap radio shack soldering iron for working on small stuff.
How much is the romulator? did you chip your eg ecu or are you just practicing? |
Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
umm.. i dont wear gloves or anything, but then again ive been soldering for maaany years. I actually use a butane soldering iron most of the time!!! I don't know why.. it gets ready in less than a minute and sounds cool.. or summin
I have nice weller super-duper controlled soldering station and a decent Hakko desoldering station. |
Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
Solder naked, it's a mind thing, when it's REALLY on the line, you won't make any mistakes. But ----, maybe I'm just a rock-star, I solder behind my bacd, and with my teeth and ----.

Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
i have a crazy 150/230 watt soldering iron....you think i can chip my ecu with that w/o frying everything?
|
Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
i did my own ecu its not hard with a nice iron and a solder sucker
|
Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
i should (meaning im lazy and might do it tomarrow) go take a pic of my 'soldering station' haha....

Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
what is some ---- is that radio shack sells a single 35watt soldering iron for $8.69, and for $8.99 you get the iron with a bunch of other crap like a sponge for cleaning it, and a heat sink and a stand, and a few other things. as soon as I have some time I'll have to get that 30 cent extra kit and make me one of these fancy things: http://www.carolinahondas.com/forums...lerpark+budget

Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
do yourself a favor and get the butane iron from RatShack for 19.99, a couple spare tips and some tinning compound for the tip. Not only does this thing rock-ass because it can also be used as a mini-blowtorch for heat shrink etc, it becomes invaluable for in-car and on the road wiring repairs!
|
Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
you should work for radio shack or at leat get commission because I think you just sold me a butane soldering iron.
|
Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
What is all this talk?!
I can socket an OBD0 ECU in about 30 minutes using nothing more than a $5 soldering iron and $2 desoldering braid from RadioShack. No burns, no cuts, no explosions. ;D Just keep practicing, hf, you'll get better and faster. |
Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
that's why we ask you for help, you are just that good.

Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
I just hit up radio shack and got a butane soldering iron, some of that tin stuff, a desoldering braid and most of the crap needed for joseph davis's homemade afc, let's see how it does.
|
Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
Radio Shack has this desoldering vacuum device thing for less than $20. It should work decent. Better than your heating method. Go there and explain your situation. They'll be able to recommend you the right one.

Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
the people at the radio shack here don't know ----. I went and asked the guy about a 5k ohm potentiometer and he looked at me like I had said too big of a word for him. I need to find a 5kohm potentiometer to complete my home made afc (as per joseph davis instructions) and I don't know if I can use the one without the legs for the board, anybody in here know?

Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
people at the shack here are the same, i dont try to ask them questions that are hard. i just grab my ---- i need...
|
Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
they like to ask me if I need help when I walk in, and as soon as I say "it's going on my car" they immediatly tell me that they don't carry automotive stuff and that they don't have it, then I go and find what I needed on my own and they smile and say "did you find everything you were looking for" when I check out. Sometimes I feel like stealing everything, but I don't.

Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
Just thank god ECUs are nothing like gaming consoles.
I mod chipped a PS2 a few days ago, I took some pictures. As a size reference I used 24AWG wire. Those are 22 wires. http://www.foo.is/gallery/ps2mod Baldur |
Re:aww fuck that burns.....socketed my ECU...
You're just a soldering newbie.
