All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

For some reason now my car is randomly throwing these codes whenever I let my rpms go above around 6000 rpms and there has to be a good bit of load on the engine...like at full throttle. Its throwing both codes at the same time. Any idea whats going on?

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

Alternator?

ELD would fire because of a lack of current in the system right?
VTEC might not be able to fire the VTEC solenoid if the voltage is lower than 12v

Random guess really...

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code

thats what i'm thinking. Any idea why it would happen at high load in high rpms and not at other times?

Chris Harris 04-26-2005 11:58 PM

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

Nope...my car is doing this ramdom weird thing where the battery light goes on in the higher RPMs and I think thats alternator too.

Not sure why it happens in the higher rpms...

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code

well whats weird is that this has happened ever since i tightened the alternator belt..which was squeeling from me not tightening it enough in the first place after swapping in my new motor. I wonder if that has anything to do with it.

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

Sounds like a correlation to me :)

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code

do you know if having the alternator belt too tight or anything would cause a strain on the electrical system.

Chris Harris 04-27-2005 11:37 AM

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

No i dont...but common sense tells me it could.

Try playing with it...loosen it up a touch. Maybe its too tight and slipping at higher RPMs ???

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code

yea i'll give it a try today.

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code

Ok well loosening it didn't work. It just made the belt squeel. Now that i tightened it back up it still squeels so it looks like its time for a new alternator belt.

What about disabling ELD through uberdata? Is this a bad idea? It seems like it would just be like cheating and overlooking the problem that is present.

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

You'll still throw the 21 code though :-\

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code

Yea thats what i was thinking too. My buddy who is a tech at honda sais that he thinks maybe one of those wiring distribution blocks under my intake manifold may be rubbing and grounding out on something metal. He sais normally if that happens it will throw codes like that, the iacv, o2 sensor, etc., along with the eld code. I looked and it looks like one of them doesn't have any electrical tape around the wires anymore and it was resting against the rear motor mount bracket so i may try ziptying it up away from metal.

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

alright i've tried everything and still no luck. I can't even find anywhere where a wire may be grounding out.

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

Hmmm, have either of you tried hooking up some type of voltmeter to the battery to monitor the output of the alternator while driving? I wonder if possibly the regulator on the alternator is going bad and allowing somewhat of a high voltage output that the computer does not like. Just a thought :-\

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code

well i fiddled around in the engine bay tonight and for some reason i did a few hard pulls on the way home without throwing any codes. Cross your fingers and pray to god that these codes don't come back. I don't know what i did, but i guess it worked.

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

ehhh nevermind....its still throwing those codes :-\. Anymore ideas guys? Any reason why i would be throwing the vtec spool solenoid code along with the eld code at the same time?

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

Is this on a P28? or a P06 Converted ECU?

Tried any different ECUs by chance?

sohc_mshue 04-28-2005 11:12 PM

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

This is on a p28. I didn't throw the code until i used my ecu for datalogging on shift_spools car...which isn't running right. You think anything on his car could have shorted something out in the ecu?

Chris Harris 04-28-2005 11:27 PM

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

I suppose it could have...

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code

well i ran a wire from the battery to the vtec solenoid and it clicked so that is working fine. Vtec is definintly engaging, but at a certain rpm it is disengaging when the check engine light comes on. Then it won't engage again after that until I turn the car off and back on. If it is something in the ecu what component would it be?

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code

I had a funky electrical problem similar to that. Try unplugging your coolant temp sensor. Fixed my weird problem (put in a new one)

then check ALL of your engine, ECU and chassis grounds

sohc_mshue 04-29-2005 11:55 AM

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code

yea i've checked all the grounds and they seem to be fine. I guess i could try unplugging the coolant temp sensor too.

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

Well my car's running fine now with the plugs gapped and replaced. It's just rich from the tune. So I don't think that my car screwed it up, it might have but I'm not having anymore problems. I hope it didn't ---- something up for you.

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code

Yea i don't know what the heck went wrong with my ecu :-\. Its definintly my ecu guys. I stuck my chip in my buddy's ecu today and put that in my car and it ran great. So any idea what part is shorted out in my ecu? I really don't want to have to buy another one :'(

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code

is this fixable?

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code 21

look for any blow capacitors or transistors. sniff around. also, figure out which pin is the vtec solenoid output, and trace it around, see if you can find any blow traces or parts.

Re: All of a sudden throwing 2 codes. Code 20 Electrical Load Detection and Code

yea i'll look around and maybe try to get some pics of the board.
