Arrow Fatal Head on Collision on QEW

The Queen Elizabeth Way has reopened following a fatal crash near the Garden City Skyway in St. Catharines early this morning.

The collision occurred at around 2:30 a.m. when a Honda Civic carrying a family of four was struck head-on by a Chevy Cavalier, which was travelling the wrong way on the highway, said OPP Sgt. Dave Woodford.

A 50-year-old Kitchener man was pronounced dead at the scene, while his two daughters an 11-year-old and 7-year-old were taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries.

The mother, who was driving the Honda, was airlifted to Sunnybrook Hospital where she is expected to recover, Woodford said.

The driver of the Chevy, an 18-year-old male from Niagara Falls, was also airlifted to hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Hes since been arrested on suspicion of impaired driving, but has yet to be formally charged, Woodford said.

The highway was closed for nearly six hours while a collision reconstruction team conducted an investigation.
