what is pinging? is it the same as detination? I think we call it pinking over here in the UK. How can i tell whether my car is pinging or not under boost?

pinging is the same thing. i don't really knpow what it sounds like, i've ran my camaro so lean that it wouldn't even rev past 5k. little ping eh?

And yes lemme tell ya when your car pings you'll know it! Its pre-detination. when the mixture ignites before it hits TDC (top dead center) its a very distinct sound. If it happens 99% chance you'll know it!

Its really hard to explain I GAURNTEE YOU when it pings youll know. sounds kinda like little small short whistles, but like a really low dead sound. its really tough to explain.

Sounds more like BB's in a tin can.. lots of people cannot identify this sound, they think its an exhaust rattle of some sort.

Jeff hit it right on the head.Thats exactly what it sounds like.My Dodge Ram was doind it.Thats exactly what it sounded like.Stuped domestics I dont know why it was pinging at 40k miles on the odometer but what ever it was warrenty covered it

yup...bb's in a can. my truck does it if i don't put 93 octane in it if i'm going up hills or putting quite a bit of load on the engine.
