i used to lighten flywheels way back... i would put a new pilot bearing in them and balance them. i probably did about 20 or so, including my own and never had a problem. i machined them right down to the ring gear! around 12lbs.

It would be worth it to install a scatter shield. I don't know if they exist for front wheel drives, but my uncle always had one in his vette. Small price to pay to save your *** in case you grenade a clutch or flywheel. Shrapnel sucks ***.

I'm getting some local guys (very good shop, 40 years racing experience) to lighten my flywheel and balance my flywheel/pressure plate assembly. I guess they're gunna test it up to 10,000 rpms, so I'm good with that. 150 bucks for 7 pounds aint bad.
