Tell your mom that 87 octane gas is cheaper then disel so she will make up the difference there.
87 octane $1.70->$1.90 about $17 -> $19 for 10 gallons
Disel $1.99->$2.30 about $20 -> $23 for 10 gallons

I think I want to build an engine for an EF four door that gets crazy MPG someday as a DD.. I have no idea where to start though

MPG racing has nothing to do with normal driving. They never go above 40mph and they don't have any of the electrics that are necessary in normal driving turned on.
And the diesels are a lot more efficient than any gasoline engine, it's a solid fact.
