Had a Compaq, BIGGEST PEICE OF ---- EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Warrenty claim for power supply and battery in first 3 months. CD drive crapped out in 1yr. Screen would stand up after 1.5yr.
Dell Inspron 1150. Now almost 2yrs old and works just as good as the day I got it. COst less then the Compaq, 10x better!!! Still faster then most peoples computer I know! This thing has seen more abuse then anything else. Grinding Dust, Weld Splatter in the shop, Everything!!1

I stay away for one reason. The govt. contracts them. Govt ---- = the lowest bidder. The Marine Corps uses NMCI as their computer service, they supply us with Dells. in an office of 10 computers, we call the bitches at elast twice a month for computer problems. 
My mom has a dell, shes replaced the motherboard twice and is now demanding a new tower from dell. Shes had it about a year and a half.
2 bad things about dells...enough to keep me away. Just my $.02

Exactly. I use a Dell Notebook, my sister has 2 (1 desk, 1 notebook), my parents have a desktop, My mom's business has a Dell Server and all Dell Stations with Zero Compaints.
They switched to Dell at work and now will never turn back.
The only thing I would do is speed up RAM as it wasn't an option when I bought it,

I myself own 2 Sony Vaio's, and knock on wood, I have never ever had any problems with either. The desktop ive had for a 2.5 years and Ive had my laptop a little over a year now.
