Default Computer broadband problem

I am having troubles setting up my sister's laptop for broadband. I unplugged my RJ-45 connection and attached it to the adapter to plug in the card [FEM656-3Com 10-100 LAN+56K Modem CardBus PC Card (Fast Ethernet)] in my sister's laptop. All the lines seem to be operating correctly.. The NIC blinks like it should and etc. It connects and recognizes that there is a network connection. However, when it attempts to send out signals, the signals never comes back. She has some crappy firewall that seemed to have been the problem, I uninstalled it and disabled the Windows XP firewall as well, still nothing. The only problem I can see is that the connector that connects to the NIC on the laptop has to be in one place to work. I do not have a spare to see if that is the problem that is not working. The "100" lights up but not the "10". Can anyone help me out here? Thanks!

only one light should work, so your disconnecting on pc and hooking up the laptop? so they're both not on the same connection right? what are you having probs with... just getting web pages to display?

try this... when connecting it ot her computer... plug the cord into her laptop... unplug ur cable modem for about a min? plug it back in and wait like 2 mins... then down in the bottom by ur clock on ur computer... double click the "two computers" showing ur connected... hit the tab called support and then details... look down to where it says (dns servers) and see if it even has any... if it doesnt have any its not getting the signal from ur cable provider... if it has it and its still not working try to refresh it or go through ur network wizard and follow it telling it how u usually connect and that should do it... if not call them and tell them to fix it... it should be free... or jus buy a router and hook both of them up at the same time... u get private ip's and share the connection...

Same connection, I have to unplug my computer to hook it up to the laptop (she's going to be using the same broadband company, so I thought I'd set it up here then she'll be set). It should send out signals and receive them too, and it will not accept them. Internet Explorer does not work, and no other programs that would use the internet work either.

windows XP home sucks big gorilla dick. from the sound of it, it seems that its what your sister has. the networking components of the OS always periodically try and do stupid ---- on its own like create unnecessary bridges or other things that can/will break you internet connection. upgrade to pro if you can find a hacked version or something.

also, if repair didnt work you could also have tried start, run, cmd. then type in ipconfig /release, then ipconfig /renew. that usually helps.

Or her NIC just wasn't sending out any DHCP requests until he hit the repair button :P.
