I normally just leave the keys in the ignition and the shotgun in plain view. Haven't had a problem yet.. sometimes I leave the dog in the truck (with the windows rolled down) but she is friendly.

Don't leave your car in public places for more than 10 minutes and park in a garage at night, it's not that hard.
