Even better and easier to return if it doesn't work.

I got a Linksys WRT54G v5 for $22 shipped, flashed it with DD-WRT and cranked the radio signal from stock 28 mW to 250 mW.

My Motorola WR850G (can also run DD-WRT) was $17 to the door.

I doubt you care about fiddling routers, but eBay is an idea.

Do you have any overheating problems cranking it up that high?

They claim to be good to 251 mW, but past 84 mW most people experience a lot of noise/harmonics. I'm guessing it needs a good old fashioned metal box and the signal would clean right up. Mine is at 251 because, signal quality issues aside, I am broadcasting an inapproriate SSID and want as many neighbors as possible to enjoy it.

I ran the v5 at 250 mW for about 45 minutes without the enclosure on, and when I unplugged it to put the cover back on it I touched the broadcast chip and it was barely warmer than my finger. I'm a spacey crackhead, so it might have sat there for 30 seconds to two minutes before I picked it up, but I can't see the board idssipating a whole lot of heat in that amount of time.

I'm gonna have to pick us a GS or older GL. I have the compact G router and it only has 1MB of flash, so no DD-WRT for me.

Even with a 9dB antenna I get such a low signal out in the garage.

Works great in the room though, I have a wireless card in my PC cause I was too lazy to run CAT5 across the room. I might have to redo that though. The DL speed is so much faster wired.

Speed is very good with the WRT54G, but it lags slightly before transfer starts and lags for a second or two if I give it multiple hits. I've been using it to drill networked drives on my server box from a laptop, so it might be a bit of lag on the server's end.

You know, I can get it to lock onto the neighbor's AP in client mode, but I can't get on the internet through it. DD-WRT FAQ was zero help on the subject. Maybe I'm stupid.
