Airtonics Sunfire |
|
I originally purchased this car for $225 from an auction for my daily driver. Realizing that I drove a "woman's" car I began to try to make it look like anything but a sunfire. All of the body work, customer fiberglassing and paint were done by myself at home in the garage.
When I bought the car it had a blown engine so I replaced it with a 2001 grand am engine with 21k miles. I decided I needed some more go unsatisfied with the 16.0 @ 86mph I ran at the track my first time. |

The turbocharger is a small T3 (42/48) from a mid 80’s dodge Chrysler. It was given to me by a friend who said I could have it so long as I promised to use it.

The Chrysler turbo has a strange flange that is not a T3. I was able to drill the casting to fit on a T3 manifold though since there is enough metal there.
I also swapped to a slip on style air filter opposed to the strange Chrysler fitting. |

I made the downpipe from one of my 2 ˝ mandrel bends that I used for charge piping. It runs into the stock exhaust (1 7/8) just before the cat converter for now…

The manifold was made by Brian from exploited racing. It looks rough but it’s effective, since he made this one his products have improved drastically. I welded the egt bun into the manifold. I also cut an egr groove in the manifold with a cut off wheel and a die grinder.

As I said he has since improved and here is proof…my new stainless manifold sitting on my bed.

I purchased this from Custom Coach of America. Anthony has been a great help, easy to deal with and extremely fast…. I had him weld on a dsm style end tank to make the install a little easier. I since regret that but it works just fine.

The car is currently running 5-6 psi. The tracks are closed for the season but the G-tech pro said 14.7 @ 100. For still having my stock exhaust and an automatic trans I’m sure my times can improve.
If your still interested in more pics of the setup I have plenty in my msn group. I have a folder named “sunfire progress” for the bodywork I did and a folder named “turbo project” for this setup. http://groups.msn.com/JbodyStuff/shoebox.msnw Final setup includes: Custom Coach of America Intercooler Exploited racing T3 manifold Cartech/Bell Eng FMU 1g DSM Bov Ford Thunderbird (2.3 turbo) 35 lb/hr injectors Autometer air/fuel gauge Autometer boost gauge Autometer egt gauge 2 ˝ in. mandrel bends from Jegs for charge pipes Nitrile tubing from mcmaster for connecting hoses T-bolt clamps from mcmaster Pro Boost MBC Other modifications: Top Fuel lightened underdrive pulley Rk poly mounts upper and lower Auto Trans Interceptor |
