commercial jet + bird = engine failure aka bird strike

I can't believe those engines are so fragile a bird could take them out. And look at that... birds are everywhere. Cant put a screen or something in front of the engine? :/
A screen would hurt efficiency too much and have to be too large. Gas turbines are very fragile. They are spinning at tens of thousands of revolutions per minute, with some pretty extreme tolerances. There really isn't anywhere for bird matter to go during a strike. It destroys more than you would think. Also, to be light enough to fly these things have a pretty low factor of safety.
It's cool that the pilot was so calm. He acted more calm than I've seen others who have a blowout...
