This may sound weird, but I had the same problem and as it turns out, my timing was all fudged up. The shop spun my gear like two teeth. That ---- drove me crazy, never even thought that was the cause.

Did you do work to the car that involved screwing with the timing? If you did, that is what it is.

Vacuum leaks often do exactly the same thing like rev-almost dead-rev-almost dead

Check your brake booster....that big diaphram inside might have gotten brake fluid on it from a leaky seal, and deteriorated enought to cause a major leak. when it lopes, pinch the vaccume line that is going to the booster. if it stops loping, then change it out.

or see if you have any loose or rotted out vaccume lines. thats what caused mine to lope...

good luck.

yeah, man I think there are many things that will cause our cars to do that...I had an 89 CRX Si that did that ----...the car would run cold(I know that sounds fucked up, but it's true)...It would be alright for awhile but after 30 or 45 minutes of driving it while it was running cold it would start that loping ----...up to 1500-2000, back down, up to 1500-2000, back down, etc...I THINK (this has been 5 years ago or so, and I smoke ALOT of pot, so my memory isn't what it used to be )my radiator was leaking around the top, which was causing my thermostat to stick open(?) and that was throwing a sensor or the ECU or SOMETHING into whack, causin' it to lope...

found the problem, the idle air control wuz at fault, not that it wuz bad but i had to take it off and theres a plate i took off on it, and inside of that there is a center thing with a white plastic ring around it that can be turned, i had to turn the ring all the way in and that wuz it, problem solved
