a small amount of smoke from turbo.. insufficient drain?
sup nogs? well my turbo is on and running, but I have a tiny amount of smoke coming from the center section of the turbo.. at first I thought it was oil on the down pipe but after cleaning it well and letting the car warm up I noticed it's from the turbo itself.. so I have a few questions..
since my setup is a/c compatible, then drain line had to go around the down pipe, unlike a straight downward drain most people run.. could this be causing the little bit of smoke i'm seeing?? it does kind of level off a bit before reaching the oil pan fitting..
secondly, if it IS the turbo, should I rebuild it with a kit on ebay or send it to blaast?
when I say a small amount of smoke, i mean, i take it to 3k RPM and could hardly get enough in my face to smell it.. less than a cigarette puts off just burning
EDIT: the turbo has almost zero shaft play, so i'm really confused at this point.. halp

well, aside from burning oil, i'll just run it for now and make a little plate witha smaller hole to go between the turbo and the feed flange.. ----
cool.. i will go back and double check all the center section bolts.
i was thinking it might be crank case pressure, since i blocked off my stock PCV, so i took off my oil cap and let it vent that way.. it didn't smoke as quickly or as bad.. still smokes though

-Sure you can check if a 1/16" restrictor helps, just in case your current setup sends too much oil to the turbo, making it overflow.
-Also, your tap in the pan is not as high as I like it to be. Maybe you're draining under the oil level which could prevent a proper drainage.
-Also, if you turbo sits a bit angled with the turbine down, it may make the turbo more prone to leak through the turbine side since it sits lower and that seal gets submerged more easily.
-if it starts smoking only when hot, then check your oil grade: if you are using 10-30, it might be just that. Some 10-40 or 5-50 would remain more viscous at high temps and be less prone to leak out of the seals.
-AFter you checked all that, then maybe a preventive rebuild including new bearings and seals and rebalancing to prevent further wear would make the center section more oil-tight. Optionally, there's a special turbine seal called the stagger gap piston ring that can also be used to reduce/retard the occurence of such oil leakage.
