As a student that can only work full-time 4 months out of the year (mind you, with none of the full-time benefits like health insurance, paid vacations, etc) I save most of my money for the school year. Last year I lived on $10k including financial aid. Each holiday, like today, I'm off work and everyone else is like "---- yes a day off!" except I don't get paid. Granted it's only $40ish to fill my tank but it's still about $30 a week I'm shorted for the 4 months I work. $10/hr doesn't go too far these days.

And it's not just the fuel cost itself, it's everything that needs to be transported or is made from petroleum. Tires, food, plastics, transported goods in general, prices are all through the roof. I'm saving extra this summer because I know I'm going to get fucked at the grocery store next school year. I'll need new tires sometime, and they've gone up a lot in the past year too.
