i assume he used bigger injectors and then didnt trim them down at all causing a super rich charge that backfires in the exhaust?

fire could have been off on the coils too, firing while the exhaust valve is open.

my toyota has the coil on a switch. turn it off, pump the gas, turn back on and watch the fireballs.

Wouldnt something more than just the pieces of the cat be coming out the exhaust if its super rich, like oil or gas? Also would the backfires be strong enough at idle to blow the cat to pieces?
