my boy took his LT1 in to get clearanced for a 389 crank, 40 over, crank polish, and beadblasted for $350.
i have no idea if that is reasonable but thats what he paid

Pretty much.

Pick a good machinist, and when he say how much it costs just say, "Yes, sir," and unlimber your wallet. They like that, if they overcharged you the first time for being a Honduh punk the next time around the price is reasonable because you proved yourself not to be a punk.
