Wierd headers, someone explain???

We used to use springs on headers on some of our vintage cars. Usually they're used for slip-joints to hold them together, so I'm not sure about the one's near the top of the header unless it's a slip joint itno the flange as well.
Would definately make for a fast tear down at the track if that was the case.
