Default CR-X SiR (B16A) Electronic VSS

What causes the VSS to crap out? It hasnt worked for a few months now. When it first happened, I was cruising down the highway and the speed just dropped. The next morning it worked fine again for about 5 kms, then dropped. Worked again the next morning for 5 kms. Didnt for a while, then worked for 5 kms and dropped.
When I went to Red Deer with Brent (Cuao), he picked up the ECU, set it back, and the speedo worked for 172 kms. I'm not sure if molesting the ECU had anything to do with it, but on the way back the speedo dropped again.
Yesterday on the way back from Calgary it worked for 30 kms. I didnt realize I was going so fast LOL. 6000rpm = 170km/h.
I pulled the little box off the back of the tranny today. Inside is a bunch of grease and 3 wires going deep into the box.
Anyone know what inside there makes it stop working? The other thing I wanted to check is which wire is it going to the ECU. I'm not sure if that would affect it or not.

Pin b16 at the ecu is your vss connection. Us usdm guys don't usually have to deal with any vss problems other than when the cable drive pops out of the tranny...on usdm the vss is built into the guage cluster. That sucks though, vss code disables vtec activation unless you have your ecu chipped to ignore it. But in case you need it, here's the pr3 pinout...http://www.hondata.com/techwiringpw0.html
