can anyone explain how this thing works? i've tried setting it but this thing makes no sense at all to me and the shop manual isnt to clear to me.. i got my belt on and car runs good but the belt has to much slack on the long side, like almost an inch and a half id say, and the belt doesnt spin nice and even while running, when i 1st started it it was making a slaping sound im almost positive was the beltor somthing to do with the tensioner, then it stopped after like 5sec and the car ran nice and quiet, not sure if it skipped a tooth on the crank pulley or what, but it idles very nice right now. but still loose.

either i set it wrong, or its bad. not sure how to tell if its bad so.. any help would be great, i really hope i dont have to take all the belts n ---- off again to replace it or somthin.

 

you basically need to hold the cam gears clockwise facing them with a wrench, and use a ratchet on the crank pulley counter clockwise to hold tension on the belt...then tighten the tensioner (pretty hard without a 3rd person)

just make sure once you take up all the slack, all your TDC marks are still in the right place.

 

We did it before me put my motor in with 3 people thats the best way but yea you will need to keep the belt tight and push the tensioner tight against the belt and bolt it down...HTH

 

Do you still have the spring on the tensioner? That in itself should pull some of the slack out. I never had any problems tightening a timing belt by myself

 

ya i dont know what happend, it was tight then it was loose after i started it, bolt was still tight on the tensioner, so i just loosen the bolt, turned the crank a few teeth and it took the slack out and i retighted it now it seems all good. didnt check to see if my timing marks are still good yet but it idles nice and drove fine around the block

the belt feels good and tight now but it still flaps at idle a little on the long part, but not bad, is that normal? it rolls smooth when i give it a little throttle

 

It's normal to have a little slack in the belt. If it's over tightened it puts excess stress on the cam journals and eventually could seize or break something in the head.

As in no bent valves. Isn't this the one that broke the t belt?

 

didnt compression test it or nothing but it runs very smooth so.. guess so
