I was looking at the homemade stick welder on this site. A stick welder could essentially be used to cut metal? Like say i had a 1/16 in pipe. Turned my stick welder up to like 140amps it would cut right through the metal.. May not be such a pretty cut but would cut it right in half right? Or say i had a 1/2in thick flange i needed a descent size hole in. i could turn my stick welder up to 220amps and make a whole right? how mangled of a hole would i get. I know a plasma cutter uses high pressure air but they make really clean cuts. say i just wanted to rip off an old exhaust.. i could just say up the amperage and cut that bitch right off huh?

 

using a SMAW for cutting you can get non consumable carbon rods and a special electrode holder that blasts compressed air into the "weld", the process is Carbon Arc Air. it looks ugly as hell though

 

The term used on many construction sites, for cutting things with stick rods, is "hot rodding." 6010 rods work well for this. Of course it's best for demolition work, since it leaves a nasty looking cut.
