turbo d16y7 on crome. Spark Plug pics, whats going on?
First sorry about the pics.. MS paint chop owns me
Ok setup:
d16y7
log mani
Garrett T25
Running a mere 4psi for the time being. Going to turn up to 8psi when I figure this out and feel comfortable.
Running Crome and street tuning the AFR via PLX M300 wideband.
In crome I'm running the p30 code with the p06 map because there aren't any d16y7 maps. Maybe there is a huge timing difference between the y7 and the p06?? Timing is the only thing I can think of that would make them white.
The M300 is damn near brand new.
These are the plugs after about 270 miles.

The one with the specks on it is the number 1 cylinder.
The specks were there from my first basemap and haven't disappeared, but haven't gotten worse since I got the AFR's tuned.
I'm running about 13.8-14.5 at part throttle
Under boost it runs about 11 to 12. Its definately running rich according to my wideband...
but the plugs look lean to me.
I have one degree retard per pound.
In crome I added a bunch of fuel just to test it out, and my wideband went deep into the 10s under boost, yet my plugs still looked like this
Any ideas? The wideband is 24 inches downstream from the turbo like the instructions said.
Don't wanna turn up the boost until I'm sure things are ok.
thanks guys

hmm that might be it. Anybody want to explain what my timing values should be around on a d16y7?
this is my crome ignition column at 4psi from 3400rpm to 7900rpm
16.75
17.00
18.00
16.00
16.00
16.00
17.25
22.25

I really am not sure about timing tuning and could use some help here. The Y7 engine doesn't have the same goofy timing like the Y8 with the cam gear being one tooth different does it?

did you actually do a pull and shut off the engine before letting off the gas? if you didn't your plugs are going to look like that. let off gas=afr of 20 and idle=afr of 14-15 which makes your plugs white.
Those plugs look great IMHO.
And I agree, those look like some tall boy 'hot' #5 plugs. Id personaly use atleast a NGK 6 heat range plug.
It sounds like you'd like to see some soot on the ground strap or the porcelain, as some confirmation of correct fueling.
Assuming a nice mid 11's to 12's in boost A/F, clean part throttle, multiple rippers every day, and a few hundred more miles, then you will see the porcelain start to tan a bit.
Ive put fresh plugs in a few cars when on the dyno, and the main things that I can see on a fresh set of plugs is, light oil burning (white ash on the ground strap), soot on the outer ring (excesive rich idle and part throttle), the 'heat' ring on the ground strap (indicates how well the plug is shedding heat to the head).
This is what I have personally noticed first hand. Ive yet to personally see the shiny death sparkles of balled up aluminum on the porcelain. I have noticed on a few cars with fresh plugs, that they may have a few very tiny black specs on the porcelain. They were deff. not detonation related, but Im leaning toward the actually quality of the burn.
Im rambling, IMHO your plugs look great for 200-300m with full on rippers. Trust your WB, and turn up the boost a bit. 10lbs is the minimum on a D.

they are 7 series plugs gapped at .035
I'm getting a slight hesitation right when boost kicks in right now, then it cleans up.
I'm going to do some more fuel tuning and hopefully everything will clear up. I hooked up my exhaust the rest of the way and its running a lot richer now so I gotta lean it out.
