Ignition switch replacement

Default Ignition switch replacement

so lately (like 3/5 times) i start my car and when i let go of 'start' it just cuts out and all power dies, wtf. Some research has led me to believe it was the ignition switch.

At first I was a little confused about what exactly the ignition switch is. if you go to www.hondaautomotiveparts.com and select your car model etc and look at "COMBINATION SWITCH" you'll see the ignition switch as #7.

Yep, i first thought it was the key part, but its nothing more then a damn wire harness. So, with new knowledge at hand i went to price shopping. Recent shops (when the rad blew and i had no time) gave me a quick quote of 250+ to do the ign switch.

First stop, Napa auto parts. Result, special order and 190.00$ ! ---- THAT.

I called honda next, ya, usually honda would be 5x that amount but not this time surprisingly. $70, new. JACKPOT.

so i pick it up bring her home to start the work. a "how-to" on honda-tech said i had to remove the steering wheel in order to remove the upper and lower steering colum covers. Here's what I did. Sorry no pics as i wanted to get this done before dark...

1. Remove lower dash cover.
2. Remove upper and lower steering column covers.
3. Unscrew the sensors from the key lock cylinder. (2 sensors 1 white, 1 black).
4. Unplug electrical connector from fuse box
5. unplug electrical connector from sub-harness.
6. remove plastic clip holding connector.
7. ::IMPORTANT:: Match the angle of the new switch to the position of the old switch, make sure wires and holes are all in the same direction.
8. put it all back in.

thats it, took me 1hr mostly cuz i had to re-do wiring for the alarm. easy as pie!

what did you use to remove the breakaway bolts?

didnt remove that. the ign switch is like a damn wiring harness plug that bolts to the back of the key cylinder.
but if you have to remove the key lock housing the manual says a 3/16" drill bit.

you know you could have pick that up at a salvage yard for much cheaper..
in any case i had the same problem with my teg. but after replacing the ignition harness, just as you did. a month or two later, began have the same problem again... since im cheap, I just added solder on the connectors inside the plastic ignitions switch, and wala.. its fixed... at least for the time being..
sue me im cheap.. lol

when all you had to do was by new :P

used parts are just that, used. and a part like this is semi-common on EF's to replace so i didnt want to risk getting a bad one (plus the little screws are a PITA to remove/replace)

Turn the breakaway bolts out with a hammer & punch and cut slots in the heads to reuse. This has worked for me on three repairs.

to replace the electronics o the ign switch these bolts do not have to be removed.

Man your having alot of small annoying things go wrong with your car. SELL IT TO ME!

lol.. uhm. no.

too add.. back in .. er, sept when the waterpump failed i think it damaged the head gasket, today on the way in to work the temps were fluctuating alot. but after 15 min it leveled out.. maybe crappy t-stat. Still runs pig rich i think i know why..

Driveway is like 45deg slope. i part nose down. Even with the car fully warm the heat is cold. when i go down the driveway to the flat road it starts to get warmer (the heat). I think the coolant is low = temp sensor saying cold = adding more fuel.

the only reason i put up w/ this car is because when i get my house i'm getting a new DD (thinking altima) and going to just have fun w/ this car. the body is in mint shape
