Striped the IHI RHB5 Turbo today.
After geting pulled over the cops for poluting. Decided needed to get to the bottom of why my setup was smoking so much after installing the turbo.
That write up on how to rebuild a IHI gave me the courage.
Well We found the culprit really fast. It was the snap ring on the exhaust side.
The downer the guy on egay lied to me he said it was a Ball Bearing Turbo. It wasnt it had the regular bronze bushes.
There is no way I can afford the 125$ + 180% import durty on a rebuild kit.
So if any of you guys have a snap ring lying arround or know a place where I can order one it would help. Do any shops sell the seprate parts of the rebuild kit ?
To get home we cut a seat spring of a lambreta and hamered into the shape of a snap ring. Needless to say its not gona last very long.
I guess the Snap ring off any IHI should work. This is an IHI RFB5.VI34

OMG!
Ive seen IHI's wear out the goove on the turbine where the ring sits in it. Most of the time, if the ring isnt visably damaged, you can bend it out so the gap is bigger, and reinstall it, flat rate style, and that works too most of the time. Be sure to clean out any carbon on the centersection near the turbine and ring etc so that it doesnt block the oil from going down the return. I had that problem on my T3 60/63 not too long ago.

I went to the local junk yard today.
Looking for a turbine wheel and snap ring.
THe largest turbo they had was a VI24. THe Exhaust turbine was tiny compared to my VI34 ex. turbine wheel.
If we could find a similar turbo here the complete turbo is going for like 40$ labour is free.
But This VI34 Ex. Turbine in a machined out VI22 Ex. housing is a mean bitch.
It just rocks. Im trying my best to keep this setup runing.
Trying to make one more. Anybody got the dims.
15mm od, 12mm ID and 1mm height sound about right ?
Those Bronze bushes I could machine up easy no problem.

Why do you keep calling it an "RFB5"? I told you once already that it is an R "H" B5 the RHB5 VI34 comes on early model Subaru's and Isuzu Impulse. If you really want to buy the whole kit, paypal me the money and I'll ship it to you as a "present" with a value of $1.00.
EDIT: Any of you who are using a brand new rebuild kit and not rebalancing the shaft while you're at it are just plain stupid. In my rebuild thread, I told you where it could be balanced for a measily $35. No wonder you guys say things like "I had my turbo for two weeks, those -________-brand name here are SHITTY....don't use them"

I marked my nut the shaft and the blades. When I put it back togehter we kept the marks lined up.The earlier tubo that was opened up had a worn snap ring it was sanded down put back and the car has done arround 15,000 Kms so far no problem.
There are no re-balancing facalites this side of the globe.
Thanks for the offer with the rebuild kit. If I dont get the snap ring from the guy above Ill pm you. 125$ + say 25$ is still like 6750/- bucks this side of the big pond.
But it may be the last resort. Thanks again.
So I was coned on egay. Which of the IHIs did come with ball bearings then ?
