unless yours building it up...just get a new short block. to do it right requires measuring clearances and picking the right bearings. physically taking them out and putting them back in isnt too bad at all.

Make sure bearings are in the green and don't cheap on the machine work! Get it deceked, honed(if need be) and micropolish the crank. You can put a motor together without any of that stuff but if you don't your only wasteing your money and time. The main things you want to be perfect is the bearings and that the cylinders arent egg shaped.

its a hassle to take the whole bottom block apart and bringing it to the machine shop. I was thinking of just getting new bearings and crank. Since my engine is like rattling and knocking like a ****. What kind of tools do i need if i was to change just the bearings and crank?

so whats the difference between crank, main, rod bearings? I'm confused? And where are each bearings located at? Wish i got a helm manual. It would be so much easier.
So to get to the bearings in the crank i have to remove the tranny?

this isnt for you man...no offense but unless you dont mind a ton of down time, go get another short block. In order to get the crank out, yes the trans needs to come off since the crank is attatched to the flywheel, which cant come out without taking the trans off. If you were just changing them and not micropolishing, you might be able to spin them out without removing the crank, but ive never tried it that way.

you can change the bearings without dropping the crank, but to remove the crank you have to pull the motor.
motor still in car, was changing the pistons out after a minor meltdown..........
Warning, oil will drip out for 1-2 weeks. Also not fun when your spining the upper bearing halfs out and a thrust washer lands in your eye!

If your engine is knocking like a ****..just say good buy and get a new one..or rebuild it with another good crank etc...
I did it..it wsa easy...it's just that I have like 3 damaged blocks with a lot of spare parts in my shed. everything was at my reach.
