Default coolant temp sensor problems

Here is the situation.

Y8 motor in a 94 EX civic. P28 ECU.

I put an aftermarket water temp gauge in, so I replaced the stock sensor with the aftermarket one. Gauge works great, but I was getting a check engine light for the CTS. So I tapped the "eater neck" housing on the front of the head, where the bleed screw is on Z6 motors.

The stock gauge is acting normally but the CEL for the sensor is not going away. This is quite upsetting. I was thinking about swapping the placement of the two sensors, but they are essentially 4in apart on the head, so I would think the temps would be the same.

the coolant sensor for the cluster is under the dist.

you removed the sensor the ecu uses.

err.. maybe the gauge cluster's sensor for temp is different location on a y8, but, still sounds like you disabled the wrong sensor.

I took out the one from under the dist and replaced it with the aftermarket one. I then put the stock one back into the other location.

see if grounding the sensor helps.

but, by disconnecting the cluster coolent temp sensor shouldn`t set off any codes, the right sensor should have 1/8 NPT threads, make sure u didnt`t take out the one that sits next to it coz that`s a ecu coolent temp sensor.

oh yea spenser get back to the GD forum bish, everyone ------ hates u :P

when I had the sensor out for about a week, the cluster gauge did not work, and I got a CEL for the coolant temp sensor. Code 6.

put they 2 stock sensors back in the head, put the autometer sender in the water neck, be done and NO issues for 6+ years now.

I was thinking of that. The temp would be approx the same in the neck and head, but different enough that the ECU would notice the diff between the two sensors. Stock they are like an inch apart, so they are identicle.
