Default GSR into 96 EX

I have a buddy that just purchased a GSR motor from a wrecked car. The motor/tranny/harness and ecu he got is from a 2000 GSR and he is putting it into his 96 EX. I know he needs the rear mount from a 99-0 Civic Si or 94-00 CRV. His concern is the wiring. He says that the ecu is the second version of OBDII and obviously his car is the first version. Under the hood, I would assume that you just plug in what plugs in and change the plugs over from the GSR harness onto the EX harness for those that don't match up. Inside the car, do we just re-pin the factory wiring into the GSR plugs. He has no plans of going turbo and he wants to remain OBDII compliant for e-check purposes. I have done some googling and I am not seeing any answers to the difference in the two versions of OBDII, so any help is greatly appreciated.

Are the OBDIIa GSR plugs the same as the 96 EX plugs? Will there need to be any repinning, etc.. I have a feeling that I am going to be the one doing his wiring and I really want to get a grasp of what needs to be done. I have done a GSR motor into a CRX, but the car used a 1-wire z-dyne ecu, so all I had to do was run the vtec wire and change a few plugs on the engine harness, it was pretty simple.

dont re pin anything haha. its all plug and play. he can even use the 00 engine harness if it has it and plug it right up to the harness on the civic that runs inside the car. so you dont have to repin anything. since its an ex you dont have to wire in vtec. the only thing i see you would have to wire up is the knock sensor. but then again dont those 96-00 civic's have knock sensors? err but check on that. if it has a knock sensor on the y8 then he doesnt need to wire that up. you can pick up that ecu from hotrex and just plug everything in. if you have any further questions just PM me

Thanks mang. This sounds like some good info, I hope it is actually that simple. I don't mind doing the rewiring and all, but plug-n-play is always better. I have yet to see his motor, so I don't know if he got the GSR harness or not, but I believe he did. I'll be sure to hit you up if we have any questions once this all starts, which I am not even sure of a timeframe in which he wants to start. I have not talked to him in over a week cause work owns me Thanks again.
